William "Max" Newill '98 was one of the finest left-handed baseball pitchers to ever wear the Brown & Gold. But the Delran, New Jersey native was so much more than just a baseball pitcher. His leadership on and off the field, in the classroom and on campus left a mark that was hard to replace.

On the baseball diamond, Max finished his career with a record-setting 21 complete games, a then school-record 20 wins and 20-13 record, and the second most strikeouts in Yellow Jacket history with 242. Just as impressive as his strikeout total was the fact that Max walked just 67 batters in 242 and one-third career innings pitched.     

Max was an Ohio Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week five times during his career (the most ever by a BW player).  As a freshman in 1995, he was BW's Freshman of the Year  and earned OAC Pitcher of the Week honors once.  As a sophomore in 1996, Max was a second-team All-OAC, honorable mention Academic All-OAC, the OAC Pitcher of the Week once, the BW's Pitcher of the Year and Yellow Jacket Award winner.  As a junior in 1997, Max was an honorable mention All-OAC, first-team Academic All-OAC and BW's Pitcher of the Year .  In 1998, Max was named second-team All-OAC and first-team Academic All-OAC (for the second straight year) and as the BW team Most Valuable Player.  Following graduation, Max signed a professional baseball contract and played for the Albany Colonie Diamond Dogs

In the classroom, Max is a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honorary, Alpha Lambda Freshman Honor Society and received the Lee Tressel Scholarship (in 1997). At the 1998 Honors Day ceremony, Max was awarded the Kenneth Steingass Award as the Outstanding Male Athlete.

In addition, he was on the  Student Athlete Advisory Committee, a College 101 freshman course assistant, the chairperson of the BW Bone Marrow Drive, a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and a sports information student assistant.

Following graduation, Max earned his master's degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University in 2000. He currently teaches business and economics and is the Head Varsity Baseball Coach at Bridgewater-Raritan High School in Bridgewater, New Jersey.
