His coaching career was highlighted in the winter of 2016 when the BW women won the NCAA Division III National Championship.

Outdoors, he competed in the 100, 220 and 440-yard dashes as an individual and was a member of the 440-yard and mile relay teams.

In 1967, Braithwaite won the Ohio Athletic Conference title indoors in the 55-yard dash and outdoors in the 100-yard dash. Braithwaite taught and coached for 31 years in the Berea City Schools System (1967-1998) and was the Head Track & Cross Country Coach from 1967 through 1976. He returned to his alma mater as a track and field assistant and sprints coach in 1977 ad remained a vital part of BW's track & field success until his retirement in the summer of 2016.

He began his BW coaching career under the direction of the legendary Hall of Famer Paul "Sparky" Adams and helped Adams and the Yellow Jackets capture 13 OAC titles. Braithwaite continued to help BW reach national acclaim when BW Hall of Famer Dr. Bill Taraschke took over and helped the Jackets win 48 more OAC titles in men's and women's cross country and track & field.

Individually in the sprints, Braithwaite coached 25 individual Division III All-Americans and 17 All-America relay squads to All-America honors in 89 separate races. At the time of his retirement, Coach Braithwaite's sprinters and relay teams held nine BW school records.
