Derek E. McKinley '82 graduated from BW in 1982 and was inducted into the Alumni Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2003.

McKinley had a star-studded collegiate career in track and field. He displayed his versatility competing in a variety of events: the long jump, triple jump, 400 meter hurdles, 4 x 100 meter relay, 800 meter relay, 1600 meter relay, and the 100 meter dash.  

In 1980, he finished second in the nation in the Division III long jump and fifth in the nation in the 400 meter hurdles.  He also ran legs of the 400 and 1600 meter relay teams that took fifth place at nationals.   In 1981 he was named the Most Valuable Runner, Most Valuable in Field Events, and Most Valuable Performer at the Cleveland Colleges Meet.  He held several school records,was All-OAC each of his four years and a 10-time All-American.  He was named B-W’s Most Valuable Player in 1979 and 1982.  

Derek continued to run competitively after graduating. He was an Olympic Festival member in 1986 and in 1986, 1989, and 1990 he went to the T.A.C. Nationals.  He was ranked in the top 50 in the United States for three years in both the triple jump and long jump.  Today, he owns a daycare and is the vice chair of the Senior Success Committee for United Way.
