Richard M. Schenk '51 was a standout four-year basketball letterwinner at Baldwin Wallace University. During his career, he and two teammates broke the then school scoring record. Schenk was named All-Cleveland District First-Team and All-Ohio honorable mention. During his senior season, Schenk was chosen to the N.A.I.A All-Tournament Team in Kansas City and was selected as the outstanding player from the Cleveland area to play with the College All-Stars against the Harlem Globetrotters.

After a stint in the Army, Schenk played National Industrial Basketball with the Milwaukee Allan Bradley Team. Following his playing days, he returned to his hometown of Newark to teach and coach. He led the Newark High School basketball team for 11 years, compiled an overall record of 179-63, and won or tied for eight C.O.L Championships with three district crowns. He was a multiple-time C.O.L. Coach of the Year and was named coach of the North/South All-Star Game in 1968.
