As an undergraduate, Jim Eibel '92 excelled in indoor and outdoor track. He won All-America honors for the long jump by placing in the top six at the NCAA National Meet. He holds the school record in the long jump at 24 feet, 11 and three-quarter inches and also excelled in the 55-,100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes. He also holds long jump records for his high school and Marietta College where he competed for one year. In 1992 he won the Kenneth F. Steingass Award as the University's Most Outstanding Senior Male Athlete.

Eibel continued his studies at Ashland University, receiving his master's degree in education administration. He taught and coached basketball, golf and track in the Wellington School District for nine years before returning to his high school alma mater where he became an elementary principal. He rose to the position of superintendent of the district.
