Herbert was a 1958 graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College and three-sport standout.

Herbert, a 1954 graduate of East Palestine High School, was a three-year letterman in three sports. In track, Herbert was the state champion in the shot put. He also was first-team Tri-County pick in football and second-team selection in basketball.

At B-W, Herbert was a four-year letterwinner in football, basketball and track for the Yellow Jackets. Herbert was a member of the 1955-56 B-W basketball team that finished third at the NAIA National Tournament. Herbert played basketball under B-W coaching legend Ray Watts. In four years the Brown & Gold posted a 50-36 record. Herbert also was B-W's leading rebounder for several seasons.

In track and field, Herbert at one time held the school shot put record. On the gridiron, Herbert started as an offensive tackle and finished his career as an defensive end. Herbert graduated with a major in biology and for 16 years worked as a conservationist in Africa and Puerto Rico. His work varied from management of national parks, the raising of monkeys, the surveying of parks, and the planning of new parks to the counting of large animal populations. Today, Herbert is in semi-retirement and working at the Painesville YMCA.

Herbert's wife, Dorothy, is a 1962 graduate of B-W with a major in education.
