Gordon A. Splete '36 graduated from BW in 1936 and was inducted into the Alumni Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 1976. 

Exemplifying the model student-athlete during his four years on the Berea campus, Splete earned three letters in both football and basketball and two in baseball. He was center and captain of the 1935 football team which led the nation in scoring and ranked high in the listing of all college grid squads.

Respected on and off of the courts, Gordon was voted the Most Popular Man during his junior year and the Most Outstanding Man during his senior year at B-W. He was elected president of the entire senior class as well as holding the same role in the Zeta Kappa fraternity.

Gordon completed an illustrious coaching career prior to his premature death in 1957, serving at York, South Amherst and Wellington High Schools. His teams experienced five undefeated campaigns and he coached four squads to Lorain County Class B Championships. Splete tutored the only unblemished team in Avon Lake prep history in 1949-50 and won four district basketball championships. A math and chemistry teacher, he was named athletic director in 1956 at Avon Lake and was also president of the Avon Teachers Association.

A devoted lay figure in the Congressional Church, Gordon was active as president of the area boat club, the Firelands District Board of Boy Scouts and was a member of the O.E.A. and N.E.A. He is survived by his wife Virginia '37, his son Jim and twins, Anne and Dick.
