While attending Baldwin-Wallace, Joe Carlo participated in four sports - football, basketball, baseball and track.  He played end and center in football and won three letters.  He earned five letters in basketball and one in baseball.  In the cage sport, he played all positions and on the hardball nine was a third baseman.  Joe played on the All Big Four Championship basketball teams and made All Big Four All Star Team three consecutive years.

Voted the "Most Valuable Player" of the 1941-42 basketball season, Carlo was second on the team in scoring. This team was the first to win the Big Four Championship and was considered the best at B-W in 22 years.  As a junior, he captained the 1942-43 basketball team, a first for a junior at B-W.  The top scorer was voted the "Most Outstanding Player."

After serving with the Army in World War II, Carlo returned to B-W, where he continued his athletic career, making "All Big Four" in 1946 as a center on the first B-W football team to tie Western Reserve as Big Four Co-Champions.

After one day's practice, his first try at throwing a javelin, he competed in the Northwestern Relays held at Bowling Green in 1943 and placed second with a throw of 160' 6".

The 1973 season marked Joe Carlo's second year as a member of the Yellow Jacket coaching staff as a football scout and the freshman team's defensive coordinator.  Carlo has been a dedicated coach for nearly 27 years, including 15 years at Newark (O.) High, and six years at Parma Valley Forge before becoming head football and track coach at Normandy High School in 1968.  In 1972 he gave up the head football coaching job at Normandy but retained his track post.

Joe and his wife, the former Mona Jeanne Wade '44, have twin children, Timothy and Millie Jo.  He received his mater's degree at Western Reserve University.  In 1965 he was named "Man of the Year" by the Parma Booster Club.  He was a member of education and athletic organizations, including the United States Track & Field Association, which he served as secretary-treasurer, and has contributed a number of articles to the Athletic Journal.
