Basketball was organized at Baldwin-Wallace in 1903, but a continuous chain of seasons did not start until 1911. In that year, Speckman was a freshman at B-W and a member of the Yellow Jacket basketball team, winning his first letter and highlighting the season as the leading scorer. This was only a start for Speckman who went on to win eight letters in basketball and baseball. The Cleveland Plain Dealer named him the outstanding basketball center in the state. Speckman led team scoring for four years and captained the squad during his senior year.

In addition to sports, Speckman was editor of the Grindstone, The Exponent, and President of the Student Assembly. "Speck" moved to a coaching and teaching position at Berea High School in the fall of 1915.

He then joined the armed services and was part of the famed Lakeside Unit which was the first American unit to arrive in France during World War I.

Speckman entered the business world after the war achieving outstanding success in the field of advertising and lithography. He retired from the presidency of the McCandish Lithograph Corporation in Philidelphia.

Listed in past years in Who's Who in Commerce and Industry, Who's Who in the East, the International Yearbook and Statesman's Who's Who, Speckman was the son of Professor Wesley N. Speckman, B-W class of 1889 and a professor of science at Baldwin-Wallace.
