Dr. Kevin Higgins was one of the best-ever wrestlers at Baldwin Wallace University and won the 1989 NCAA Division III National Championship at 177 pounds. He was the second Yellow Jacket in school history to win a national title.

After playing football as a freshman in 1985, Kevin decided to concentrate on his academics and wrestling and became not only a national champion but a team-leader and mentor. He compiled an outstanding 100-27-1 career record with a .785 winning percentage with one Ohio Athletic Conference title and placed in the top-four all four years, including earning three All-OAC awards.

Kevin’s 100 career victories was BW’s all-time school-record when he was a senior. He broke the previous mark which was set by Hall of Famer Don Chadwick ’56. Don was Kevin’s coach at BW his first three seasons and then BW Hall of Famer Rich Fleming took over when he was a senior.

In addition to being an outstanding athlete, Kevin was a NWCA (National Wrestling Coaches Association) Scholar All-American and graduated with a degree in biology and had minors in chemistry and physics.

Following graduation from BW, Kevin, who grew up in Elyria, Ohio and graduated from Elyria High School, went on to earn a Master’s degree from the University of Alabama in healthcare science and a Doctorate in Education (Ed.D) in Educational Leadership from  Samford (Ala.) University.

Today, Kevin is the Assistant Principal and Athletics Director at Creekview High School in Canton, Georgia. In 2015, Kevin was named as the Region 7AAAAA Athletic Director of the Year. He is in his 27th year with the Cherokee County School District (in 2018-2019) and his sixth as the athletic director and assistant principal at Creekview.

Prior to taking over as athletics director, Kevin taught science for 21 years at Sequoyah and Creekview and coached wrestling for 21 years and seven years of football at Sequoyah and freshman volleyball for three years at Creekview.

As a wrestling coach, Kevin’s teams won 255 dual meets, 11 county championships, five region championships and two state titles. His grapplers accumulated 51 individual region championships and 16 individual Georgia state titles.

In addition to being a member of the BW Hall of Fame, Kevin also is a member of the Lorain County Hall of Fame, Cherokee County Athletic Hall of Fame and he recently was inducted into the Georgia Chapter of the National Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame for a lifetime of service to the sport of wrestling.

Kevin resides in Ball Ground, Georgia with his wife of 27 years, Rhonda, and the couple have two children, Lindsay aged 22, Wyatt aged, 16.
