Jim Tressel's '75 decision to coach football came as no surprise, as he grew up watching his father, the late Lee Tressel's success as the longtime coach of the Yellow Jackets. Tressel, an all-conference quarterback for BW, went on to coach at Youngstown State University where he led his teams to six national I-AA championship games and four national titles. In 1991, he and his father became the only father-son combination to win national football titles.

In 2001, Jim was named head football coach of the Ohio State University Buckeyes.  In 2002, he led his team to the NCAA Division I national championship. In that season, he compiled a 13-0 record and was named Division I Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association. He also won that honor three times while at Youngstown,  thus becoming the first person in the history of the AFCA to be Coach of the Year at two different schools. 

In 2003, Jim was BW's undergraduate commencement speaker and received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the College. He is involved in community service in the Columbus area and also is active in the AFCA, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Outstanding Young Men of America.
