BEREA, OHIO – Sophomore shortstop Eric Murphy (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) and freshman 2B Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) each had hits in each of the first three innings as the Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington College, 15-6 and 16-4, today in an OAC doubleheader at Heritage Field on Baseball Alumni Day. The doubleheader was the first two contests in a five-game homestand for the Yellow Jackets. BW won the opener, 15-6. Murphy was 3-for-4 with two singles and a triple, three runs scored and three runs batted-in in the first three innings as BW built a 16-0 lead. In the fourth inning, he nearly had his fourth straight safety, but grounded out to shortstop on play that was close at first base. Zimmerman was 3-for-3 with a single, double, triple, two runs scored and a pair of RBI.
The its win, BW's improves to 19-6 overall and 8-2 in the OAC and one game back of first place Marietta College in the OAC Standings. With its loss, Wilmington now is 4-23 overall and 1-9 in the league.
BW again jumped out to a big lead as it scored six times in the bottom of the first inning. Senior CAPITAL ONE Academic All-American and All-Mideast Region left fielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph Collegiate Institute) walked and scored on a double by junior third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) for a 1-0 lead. Gugliotta made it 2-0 when he advanced to third base on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore All-OAC designated hitter Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) then singled, stole second base and scored to make it 3-0 following a single by Murphy, who advanced to second on a throw to home plate. Murphy scored to make it 4-0 when Zimmerman tripled and scored to make it 5-0 when junior catcher Joe Hiller (Twinsburg) reached base via a Quaker error. After Hiller stole second base, he scored when senior All-OAC center fielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria) singled him home for a 6-0 advantage.
BW increased its lead to 9-0 in the bottom of the second inning with three runs. With one out, sophomore All-OAC first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North) walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After sophomore right fielder Alex Green (Pickerington/ North) was hit by a pitch, the duo advanced to second and third base, respectively, and both scored when Murphy tripled. Murphy scored on a pitcher's balk.
In the bottom of the third, the Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 16-0 with seven more runs. Neuschaefer reached via Wilmington error and stole second base. He scored when Toughey doubled. Toughey scored when Gugliotta doubled and Gugliotta scored when Chontos doubled for the third straight two-bagger. Chontos scored when Green singled. After an out and Green stole second base, moved to third on a Murphy single and scored when Zimmerman doubled. Murphy scored on a Hiller sacrifice fly. Zimmerman scored when pinch hitter in freshman Alex Havens (Twinsburg) doubled.
Wilmington got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when it score twice to make it 16-2, another run in the sixth it make it 16-3 and one more in the eighth to make it 16-4.
On the mound, senior right-hander David Redovian (Fairlawn/ Copley) made his first start of the season after five relief appearances and pitched the first five innings and allowed five hits and two runs (both earned), struck out seven and walked one as he improved to 3-0. He was replaced by sophomore righty transfer Brian Taricska (Bay Village/ Bay) who threw the sixth inning, allowed two hits, one run (earned) and walked one batter. Sophomore righty Chuck Jones (Kettering/ Fairmont) pitched the seventh inning and allowed one base hit and struck out two batters. Senior righty Will Pantages (Akron/ Firestone) began the eighth inning and gave up two base hits and one run (earned) before being relieved by senior righty Hank Green (Patsakala/ Watkins Memorial). Green pitched one-third of an inning and allowed a hit and walked a batter and allowed one of Pantages base runners to score. In the ninth, freshman Tom Loeffler (Shaker Heights) allowed just a walk.
At the plate in addition to Murphy and Zimmerman, Gugliotta was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Toughey, who reached base all five times in the first game, was 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI.
BW remains home to play OAC rival Heidelberg University on Tuesday, April 16 in a league doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. The Jackets conclude the five-game homestand when they host non-league foe LaRoche (Pa.) College for single, nine-inning game on Wednesday, April 17 at 2:00 p.m. Next Saturday, April 20, BW is at Ohio Northern University.
