BEREA, OHIO – Eight of nine starters recorded multiple hits and the Baldwin Wallace University baseball team beat Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 23-12, today (Wednesday, May 1, 2013) in a non-league game on Seniors' Day at Heritage Field.  Head coach Brian Harrison honored CAPITAL ONE Academic All-American left fielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute), All-Ohio Athletic Conference center fielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria/ Senior), utility infielder Matt Kulick (Wilmot/ Fairless), and right-handed pitchers Will Pantages (Akron/ Firestone), Pat Havens (Twinsburg), Dave Redovian (Fairlawn/ Copley), Jon Tenley (Wadsworth) and Hank Green (Pataskala/ Watkins Memorial prior to the game for their contributions to the revival of the program during the last four seasons.

The win improves BW to 26-12 overall prior to its second-ending OAC doubleheader Saturday at Otterbein University.  JCU falls to 23-14 overall.  The Yellow Jackets and Blue Streaks also split an OAC doubleheader earlier this season.

BW scored 20 or more runs for the first time since beating Lourdes University, 20-0, on April 24, 2012.

BW's 7-8-9 hitters combined to go 9-for-13 with three doubles, three walks, 14 runs batted-in, and nine runs scored.  Neuschaefer led the Yellow Jackets at the plate by going 3-for-4 with his fourth double of the season, a walk, a career-high six RBI, and two runs scored.  Sophomore shortstop Eric Murphy (Brook Park/ Midpark) went 3-for-5 with a double, his seventh of the season, a walk, five RBI, and four runs. Hiller was 3-for-4 with a double, his fourth, walk, three RBI and three runs.  Chontos was 2-for-3 with a double, his eighth, three walks, two RBI, and three runs.  Junior third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) went 2-for-6 with a walk, two RBI, and one run.

John Carroll scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning before Toughey, who reached base on a bunt single, scored on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the frame and tied the score, 1-1.  The Blue Streaks batted around in the second and four hits keyed a five-run rally.

A RBI single by Neuschaefer in the BW second scored Murphy, who hit a one-out double, and cut JCU's lead to 6-2.

In JCU's half of the third, the Blue Streaks took advantage of a balk and an error and rallied for four runs to take a 10-2 lead before BW broke out the bats in the bottom of the fourth.

Fifteen Yellow Jackets stepped to the plate in the fourth as BW recycled two Blue Streak pitchers while exploding for 11 runs and a 13-10 lead.  A two-run double by sophomore All-OAC first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North) and RBI double from junior catcher Joe Hiller (Twinsburg) sparked a 10-hit inning in which 10 consecutive Yellow Jackets reached base safely, including five straight hits, and eight drove in runs.

JCU scored a single run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to cut the gap to 13-12, but BW batted around again in the seventh and extended its lead to 18-12.  Murphy drew a bases loaded walk that was followed by Hiller getting hit with a pitch, and Neuschaefer plated three more runs with a bases-clearing double.

A two-out, two-run single by Murphy and another RBI single by Neuschaefer in the eighth tacked on three insurance runs.

Tenley made his second career start on the mound and pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits, and struck out one batter.  Freshman righty Alex Albright (North Royalton), making his fifth appearance of the season, pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief, allowed six runs (one earned) on five hits, struck out five and walked four, and earned the win to improve to 2-1.  Freshman right-hander Matt Wittels (Lyndhurst/ Brush) pitched one inning before giving way to freshman righty Tom Loeffler (Shaker Heights).  Loeffler struck out two batters and stranded two runners while closing out the eighth inning.  Freshman righty Conor Murphy (Westford, Mass./ Northeast) allowed two hits in closing the ninth.

Due to self-imposed sanctions, BW will not participate in either the 2013 OAC or NCAA Division III tournaments.

A year ago, the Yellow Jackets set a single-season school-record with 27 victories and a 27-13 record.
