Yellow Jackets Defeat Mount St. Joseph, 11-4

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLORIDA – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated the College of Mount St. Joseph, 11-4 today (Friday, March 15, 2013) on the sixth day of its annual Spring Break trip at the Snowbird Baseball Classic. This was the Yellow Jackets' third win in a row.

With its victory, BW is now 9-2 overall. The Lions' fell to 3-6 with their loss.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a one run advantage in the first inning when senior Academic All-American and All-OAC left fielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) reached base on a leadoff walk. He then stole second base, and reached third on an error by the Mount St. Joseph catcher. Toughey was then driven in by junior third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg).

BW and the Lions' each scored three runs in each of their halves of the third inning to keep the Yellow Jacket lead at one run (4-3). After a scoreless fourth and fifth innings, Mount St. Joseph tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the sixth inning.

The Yellow Jackets then scored two runs in the seventh inning when sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference first basemen Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North) and sophomore right fielder Alex Green (Pickerington/North) each drove in one run. This extended the BW advantage to 6-4.

In the eighth, Gugliotta and Toughey each had two RBI singles to put the game out of reach with a lead of 10-4. The Yellow Jackets then tacked on one more run in the ninth inning to make the final score 11-4.

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by Chontos as he had three hits, and one run batted in. Toughey and Gugliotta each recorded two hits and had three RBI.

In addition, senior center fielder Nolan Neuschafer (Elyria), sophomore shortstop Eric Murphy (Brook Park/Midpark) and freshman designated hitter Hunter Handel (Akron/Green) each posted two hits on the day. Neuschaefer hit the first homerun of his career in the third inning of today's game.

On the mound, sophomore right-hander Anthony Alioto (Mayfield Heights/Mayfield) started for BW and threw five and one-third innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out two and not walking a batter. In relief, junior righty Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) picked up the win as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, without allowing a run or a hit. Freshman Matt Wittels (Lyndhurst/Brush) and senior Will Pantages (Akron/Firestone) combined to throw the final three innings allowing no runs and striking out three.

BW returns to action tomorrow, March 16, 2013, when it plays Denison University in a single, nine-inning game at 11:30 a.m. The Yellow Jackets are playing seven varsity and two junior varsity games in seven days in the Sunshine State.
