Baseball Team Defeats Mount St. Joe, 10-3

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA. – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated the College of Mount St. Joseph, 10-3, tonight (Sunday, March 10, 2013) on the first day of its Annual Spring Break Trip at the Snowbird Baseball Classic. The Yellow Jackets continue their hot start as they improved to, 6-0.

With its loss, the Lions are now 2-2 overall.

The Yellow Jackets grabbed a 4-1 lead after a double by sophomore Alex Green (Pickerington/ North) that scored two runs to cap off a three run third inning. BW then added three more runs in the fifth when sophomore All-OAC first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North), sophomore All-OAC designated hitter Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) and freshman second baseman Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) each drove in a run.

BW added a run to its lead in the sixth before Mt. St. Joseph scored two runs in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 8-3. The Yellow Jackets would then respond with a run in the bottom of the seventh and eighth to make the final score, 10-3.

BW outhit the Lions, 12-4.

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by Chontos as he recorded three hits, two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases.

In addition to Chontos, senior Academic All-American and All-OAC left fielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) and sophomores Eric Murphy (Brook Park/Midpark) and Green each recorded two hits.

On the mound, senior first-team All-OAC righthander Pat Havens (Twinsburg) started and pitched six innings, improving his record to 3-0. He surrendered only three hits, one run and recorded six strikeouts. He was followed by junior Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) and freshmen Tom Loeffler (Shaker Heights) and Matt Wittels (Lyndhurst/Brush) who combined to pitch the final two and two-thirds innings, while retiring eight of the last nine batters with four strikeouts.

BW returns to action on Monday, March 11, 2013, when the Yellow Jackets play Ohio Wesleyan University in a single, nine-inning game at 4:00 p.m. This will be BW's second game in the Sunshine State.
