NORTH CANTON, OHIO – Senior CAPITAL ONE Academic All-American left fielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ East Amherst) set the Baldwin Wallace University single-season school-record for runs scored with 54 as the Yellow Jacket baseball team swept host, NCAA Division II and non-league foe Malone University, 8-3,  today (Tuesday, April 23, 2013) in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader at Thurman Munson Stadium.  The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 5-4, and you can read about it here.

Toughey, who also is All-Ohio Athletic Conference and NCAA Division III All-Mideast Region, singled in the top of the first inning, moved to third base on a single by junior third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) and stole home when he and Gugliotta perfected the double-steal.  The run was the 54th scored this season and broke his own record which he set a year ago with 53.  He later scored his 54th run this season in the fourth inning. In addition, Toughey's two runs scored leaves him one shy of the BW career record of 143 that was set by former CAPITAL ONE Academic All-American CF Cody Kidd from 2006 through 2009.

With its win, BW is 23-8 overall. Malone is 16-23 overall.

With Toughey and Gugliotta leading the way, the Yellow Jackets gained a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After Toughey scored and Gugliotta stole second, Gugliotta moved to third base via a Malone wild pitch and sophomore first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North) was hit by a pitch.  Gugliotta scored to make it 2-0 when sophomore RF Alex Green (Pickerington/ North) reached via a fielder's choice that eliminated Chontos at second base. Green advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a ground out and scored after another wild pitch.

BW built its lead to 4-0 in the second inning. With two outs, senior All-OAC center fielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria) singled, stole second base and scored when Toughey reached base via a Malone error.

Malone came back with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to close the gap to 4-3.

Undaunted, BW came back in the top of the fourth with four more runs. After there was one out, freshman designated hitter Hunter Handel (Akron/ Green) doubled and scored to make it 5-3 on a single by junior catcher Chaz McGrain (Valley City/ Olmsted Falls).  After Neuschaefer doubled and sent McGrain to third, Toughey scored the duo with a single to make it 7-3.  Toughey advanced to second on afailed pickoff attempt, to third via a wild pitch and scored on a Chontos single to make it 8-3.

At the plate, Toughey, Gugliotta and Neuschaefer led the way with two hits each. Toughey was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two runs batted-in and a stolen base.  Gugliotta was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Neuschaefer was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a theft.

On the mound, sophomore right-hander Anthony Alioto Jr. (Mayfield Heights/ Mayfield) started his team-high 10th game of the season and pitched all seven innings for his first complete game of his career as he improved to 3-1 overall. He allowed six hits, three runs (one earned), struck out two and issued one walk.

BW returns to action tomorrow, Wednesday, April 24 when they host traditional rival Hiram College on Seniors' Day at 4:00 p.m. at Heritage Field. BW also plays a key OAC doubleheader at Marietta College this Saturday, April 27 at 1:00 p.m. Marietta currently leads the OAC at 11-3 in league play and BW is in second place at 10-4.
