PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Senior All-Region right-hander Pat Havens (Twinsburg) allowed just three hits and hurled his second career shutout in leading the Baldwin Wallace University baseball team to a 5-0 shutout of Denison University today (Saturday, March 16, 2013) in its final game at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla.  The Yellow Jackets played seven varsity and two junior varsity games in seven days on its annual Spring Break Trip to the Sunshine State.

Havens, who improved to 4-0 in 2013 and 16-6 for his career, hurled the fifth complete game and second shutout of his career while lowering his season earned run average to 2.89.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 10-2, finish their seven-game stint in Florida 5-2, and have won four straight games.  Denison fell to 2-5.

A leadoff triple by senior All-Region and CAPITAL ONE Academic All-American left fielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) and a run batted-in ground out by junior third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) in the bottom of the first inning gave the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.  BW plated a run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and added one more insurance tally in the eighth.

A RBI single by Gugliotta in the fifth scored senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference center fielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria/ Senior), who tripled to leadoff the inning.

In the sixth frame, sophomore All-OAC second baseman Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) reached base on an error, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third, then scored on a RBI single by sophomore shortstop Eric Murphy (Brook Park/ Midpark) to increase the BW lead to 4-0.  Murphy also scored on a wild pitch in the eighth.

The Yellow Jackets rapped out 10 hits, including two each from sophomore right fielder Alex Green (Pickerington/ North), sophomore All-OAC first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North), Murphy and Neuschaefer.

Havens struck out five Big Red batters, allowed two walks, and retired nine consecutive batters between the third and sixth innings.  He retired the side five times.

Big Red starter Ian Barry gave up four of the five Yellow Jacket runs (two earned) on eight hits over 6.0 innings and struck out and walked one, and suffered the loss to fall to 0-2.  Georgie Montes pitched the seventh and eighth innings, allowing one run (earned) on two hits while striking out one and walking two.

BW returns to the diamond Saturday and Sunday, March 23-24, 2013 when it travels to the University of Pittsburgh - Bradford for a three-game series.  Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday's game is slated for 12:00 noon.
