PITTSBURGH, PENNYSLVANIA -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team ended a four-game winning streak as it lost, 4-3, today (Saturday, March 23, 2013) at LaRoche (Pa.) College. This was BW's first northern game after its annual spring break trip (March 10-16).
The Yellow Jackets, who had a three-game set at Pitt-Bradford (Pa.) postponed due to inclement weather, travelled to LaRoche instead. With its loss, BW falls to 10-3 overall. With its victory, LaRoche is 11-3 overall.
The Redhawks gained a 3-0 lead with one run in the first and two in the second. LaRoche increased its advantage to 4-0 with a run in the fourth before BW began its comeback. The Yellow Jackets scored twice in the sixth and one in the seventh to close the gap to 4-3, and had the tying run at second base in the top of the ninth but couldn't get a game-tying base hit.
In the sixth with one out, sophomore right fieler Alex Green (Pickerington/ North) walked and moved to third base on a double by sophomore Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North). Following a fly out, sophomore shortstop Eric Murphy (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) delivered a two-run single to score both Green and Chontos.
In the seventh, senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference center fielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second when senior All-OAC, Academic All-OAC and CAPITAL ONE Academic All-America left fielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph Collegiate) drew a bases on balls. Following an out, Neuschaefer scored when Green singled him home.
In the ninth, BW's leadoff hitter/ pinch hitter, freshman Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) reached on an error, was sacrificed to second but was unable to score the tying run.
At the plate, LaRoche out-hit the Yellow Jackets, 7-5, as five separate BW student-athletes each had a hit.
On the mound, senior All-OAC and NCAA Division III All-Mideast Region pitcher Pat Havens (Twinsburg), this week's OAC Pitcher of the Week, started and suffered his first loss of the season to fall to 4-1 overall. He pitched the first five innings and allowed four hits, four runs (three earned), struck out two and walked three. He was followed by sophomore Anthony Alioto. who pitched the final three innings. He allowed three hits, no runs, struck out two and walked two.
BW returns to action on Friday, March 29 when it hosts its home and Ohio Athletic Conference season-opening doubleheader at Heritage Field in Berea.
