Durbin Records First Career Win as BW defeats NCAA Division I Dayton

DAYTON, OHIO – Junior righthander Cory Durbin (Canton/GlenOak) won his first career victory in his first career appearance as the Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated NCAA Division I University of Dayton today (Wednesday, April 3, 2013) by final score of 8-6 in a single nine-inning game at Time Warner Cable Stadium.
   
With the victory, the Yellow Jackets improved to 14-4 overall and have won four their last five games.  With the loss, the Flyers fell to 7-16-1 overall.

BW took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as senior All-Mideast Region and CAPITAL ONE Academic All-American left fielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) scored the first run of the game on the ground out run batted-in by sophomore Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North).  Toughey reached on an error to lead off the game and went to third on the double to right field by sophomore right fielder Alex Green (Pickerington/North).

Dayton plated two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.  
The Yellow Jackets regained the lead in the top of the second inning when sophomore shortstop Eric Murphy (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) scored on the RBI single by sophomore catcher Chaz McGrain (Valley City/Olmsted Falls).  Murphy led off the inning with a walk and went to second on a ground.  McGrain, who went to second on the throw and advanced to third on a single by Toughey,  scored the last run of the inning on an RBI single by senior third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg).

 The Flyers tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifce fly by junior Ralph Alloco scoring red-shirt freshman Jack Schutzius, who led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a double by sophomore A.J. Ryan.

Dayton regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as it scored two runs on two hits to take a 5-3 lead.

BW cut into the lead in the top of the fifth inning as McGrain reached on a fielders choice, driving in senior Matt Kulick (Wilmont/Fairless).  Kulick, who came in to pinch hit, led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a single by Murphy and to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman second baseman Mark Zimmerman (Akron/Green).
A two-out single in the bottom half of the inning by freshman Aaron Huesman plated one run and the Flyers again led by two runs at 6-4.

The Yellow Jackets regained the lead at 7-6 in the top of the sixth inning.  Toughey reached on an error and advanced to second, stole third and scored on the RBI single by Gugliotta to lead off the top of the sixth inning.  Gugliotta stole second, advanced to third on the double by Kulick and scored when Murphy reached on an error.  Kulick advanced to third on the error and scored when Murphy tried to steal second but was thrown out.
BW added to its lead at 8-6 in the top of the seventh inning as Zimmerman reached on an error, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on the RBI single by senior centerfielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria).

The Yellow Jacket scored eight runs on nine hits and were led by Toughey and Gugliotta, who each went 2-for-5.  Gugliotta added two RBI and Toughey scored two runs.  Green, Kulick, McGrain, Murphy and Neuschaefer all added a hit.

Freshman Alex Albright (North Royalton) got his second start of the season and pitched four and two thirds innings He allowed  six runs on six hits with one strikeout and three walks.  Durbin came in relief in the fifth inning and retired 13 of the final 14 batters he faced.  He pitched four and one third innings and did not allow a run with just two hits and two strikeouts.

BW is back in action this Saturday, April 6 when they travel to Alliance for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with the University of Mount Union.   First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
