ADA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team fell to Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University, 5-4 in eight innings, today (Sunday, April 21, 2013) in the first game of league doubleheader at Herb Strayer Field in Ada.  The second game begins in 20 minutes.

The loss, BW's first in extra innings this season, drops the Yellow Jackets to 20-8 overall and 9-4 in the OAC, and two games behind conference leader Marietta College.  The Polar Bears improve to 15-15 overall and 6-7 in the OAC.

A bases-loaded single by junior third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) in the top of the second inning scored junior catcher Chaz McGrain (Valley City/ Olmsted Falls) and freshman right fielder Jerry Scholle (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) as the Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead.

BW extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth. Senior CAPITAL ONE Academic All-American Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) led off with a double, his team-high 10th of the season, advanced to third on Gugliotta's fielder's choice, then scored on a ground out by sophomore All-OAC first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North).

Junior right-hander Jon Capadona (North Royalton) took a no-hitter into the fourth inning, but surrendered a triple to sophomore Jack LaMarca and a double to sophomore Dan Belliveau and ONU tied the game.

The Polar Bears took a 4-3 lead in the fifth on a run batted-in ground out by freshman Grant Wilson, but Chontos' RBI single in the sixth plated Toughey, who also singled, and chased ONU starter Austin Price from the mound, as the Yellow Jackets tied the game, 4-4.

ONU loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but junior right-hander Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) and freshman righty Brandon Cichocki (Walled Lake, Mich./ Central) combined to coax a fielder's choice and double play to work out of the jam.

In the seventh frame, freshman second baseman Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) and sophomore Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls), pinch hitting, both reached base, but the Yellow Jackets failed to break the tie.

Cichocki picked up three strike outs in ONU's half of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

BW went down in order in the eighth before freshman Nick Eltzroth's game-winning single delivered Belliveau.

Toughey led the Yellow Jackets at the plate by going 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Scholle was 2-for-3 with a run and Gugliotta drove in two runs to up his season total to a team-high 30.

Capadona allowed four runs (three earned) on just three hits, struck out a season-high five batters and walked three, but worked to a no decision.  Freshman righty Tom Loeffler (Shaker Heights) allowed one hit and walked one batter in the sixth inning before giving way to Fodor, who recorded one out. Cichocki allowed one run (earned) on three hits and struck out three batters in 1 1/3 innings of relief, but suffered the loss and fell to 0-1.

BW returns to action Tuesday, April 23 when it travels to North Canton to play Division II Malone University in a non-league doubleheader at Thurman Munson Stadium at 11 a.m.  BW also hosts traditional rival Hiram College on Wednesday, April 24 at 4 p.m. on Seniors' Day prior to a road doubleheader at Marietta next Saturday.
