BW Baseball Defeats Wheaton, 13-9

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLORIDA – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated Wheaton (Ill.) University, 13-9, today (Thursday, March 14, 2013) on the fifth day of its annual Spring Break trip at the Snowbird Baseball Classic.

With its victory, BW is now 8-2 overall and has won two straight games. The Thunder fell to 3-3.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 6-0 advantage in the second inning. The rally was capped with a bases clearing three-run double by sophomore Alex Green (Pickerington/North). BW and Wheaton traded runs in third inning to keep the Yellow Jacket lead at six, with the score 7-1.

In the top of the fourth inning, sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference designated hitter Zach Fertser (Olmsted Falls) had a run batted-in double to extend BW's lead to 8-1. The Thunder answered with six runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to 8-7.

BW scored two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings to extend its lead to 12-7. In the bottom of the eighth, Wheaton scored one run, however, sophomore All-OAC first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North) laced a RBI double in the top of  the ninth inning to secure the win.

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by Ferster with three hits, including one double, three runs scored, two RBI, and one walk. Chontos had two doubles, three RBI, two runs scored and three walks. Junior Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) had two hits, scored three runs and had one RBI.

On the mound, freshman right-hander Alex Albright (North Royalton) started for BW and threw three and one-third innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits while striking out one batter. In relief, senior righty Dave Redovian (Fairlawn/Copley) picked up the win as he pitched four innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out one. Junior Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) and freshman Tom Loeffler (Shaker Heights) combined to throw the final one and two-third innings, allowing one run (earned) and striking out two.

BW returns to action tomorrow, Friday, March 15, 2013, when it plays The College of Mount St. Joseph in a single, nine-inning game at 2:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets are playing seven varsity and two junior varsity games in seven days in the Sunshine State.
