Toughey Homers, But BW Baseball Falls at Capital in Game Two

BEXLEY, OHIO – Senior CAPITAL ONE Academic All-American and All-Ohio Athletic Conference left fielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) hit his team-high second home run of the season, but the Baldwin Wallace University baseball team fell to OAC rival Capital University, 10-3, today in the second game of conference doubleheader at Clowson Field. The Yellow Jackets will return home tomorrow for a five-game homestand.

The doubleheader split leaves BW at 17-6 overall and 6-2 in the OAC. Capital improves to 13-11 overall and 3-5 in the OAC.
   
Capital rapped out five singles and took a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Anthony Calabrese drove in Nate Campbell, and Ryan Pearson's two-out knock scored Calabrese and Matt Carnahan.
BW chipped into the Crusader lead in the top of the second when freshman second baseman Mark Zimmerman's (Akron/ Green) run batted-in ground out scored freshman designated hitter Hunter Handel (Akron/ Green), who led off the inning with a single, and advanced to third base on a throwing error.

The Yellow Jackets tied the game the following inning after senior All-OAC centerfielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria/ Senior) drew a leadoff walk, and Toughey followed with a two-run home run.

Three hits and two errors led to a six-run Capital sixth and the Crusaders added an insurance run in the eighth.  Starter Jeremy Finchum retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced to secure the win.
Toughey led BW at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a double, home run, two RBI and one run scored.  Sophomore right fielder Alex Green (Pickerington/ North) and Handel also tallied two safeties.

Sophomore right-hander Anthony Alioto Jr. (Mayfield Heights/ Mayfield) started and worked five and one-third innings, allowed six runs (five earned) on 10 hits, and struck out three batters, but suffered his first loss of the season to fall to 2-1.  Junior left-hander Cory Durbin (Canton/ GlenOak) allowed three runs (none earned) on one hit and walked one without recording an out.  Junior righty Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) gave up one hit in two-thirds of an inning of relief.  Freshman righty Matt Wittels (Lyndhurst/ Brush) gave up one run (unearned) on three hits in one and two-thirds innings of relief.  Senior right-hander Jon Tenley (Wadsworth) retired the only batter he faced in the eighth frame.

BW returns to Berea tomorrow, Saturday, April 13 to open a five-game homestand by hosting Wilmington College in an OAC twinbill at 1 p.m. before taking on Heidelberg University on Tuesday, April 16 in a league doubleheader at 1 p.m.  The Jackets also host non-league foe LaRoche (Pa.) College for on Wednesday, April 17 at 2 p.m.
