BW Baseball Team Beats Wabash for Sweep and 5-0 Record

FRANKLIN, KENTUCKY -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated Wabash (Ind.) College, 6-3, to earn a sweep in its doubleheader with the Little Giants. BW won the first game, 11-10, and is undefeated heading into next weekend's annual spring break trip. The games were originially scheduled to be played in Nashville, Tennessee, but due to wet conditions, they were moved to Franklin-Simpson High School in Kentucky.

With its victory, the Yellow Jackets are 5-0 overall and next play the College of Mount St. Joseph on Sunday, March 10 in the first game of the Snowbird Baseball Tournament in Port Charlotte, Florida. BW will play seven games in seven days. You can view more information on the trip at http://snowbirdbaseball.info/tournament-info/2013-schedule/.  With its loss, Wabash is 0-2 overall.  The Little Giants are on their way to Florida to begin their annual spring break trip.

The Yellow Jackets lead off hitter senior CAPITAL ONE Academic All-American Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./St. Joseph Collegiate Institute) hit a double down the right field line to start the game.  Toughey, who also is All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop
Eric Murphy (Brook Park/Midpark). Murphy finished the twinbill with five runs batted-in.

In the top of the fifth inning, Wabash (Ind.) tied the game, 1-1, following a wild pitch by BW relief pitcher David Redovian. 

BW answered back and retook the lead at 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run double by sophomore All-OAC first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North).

The Little Giants scored a run in the top of the seventh off of a single by Hayden Williams to close the gap to 4-2.  Wabash right fielder Tyler Ownsby singled home a run in the top of the eight to make the score even closer at 4-3.  

In the bottom of the bottom of the eighth, BW added a pair of insurance runs with a single up the middle by freshman designated hitter Hunter Handel (Akron/Green) to make it 5-3, and freshman OF/ pinch runner Jerry Scholle (Hinkley/Medina Highland), who ran for sophomore right fielder Alex Green (Pinkerington/North) scored on a sacrafice fly by junior catcher Joe Hiller (Twinsburg) and make it 6-3. 

At the plate, Chontos went two-for-three with the key three-run double in the fifth.  Toughey continued his hot streak going two-for-four and scoring twice. In the first game of the doubleheader, Toughey went 4-for-4 with four runs scored, four RBI and a stolen base. 

On the mound, junior right hander Cory Waite (Willoughby/South) pitched a strong four innings and allowed one hit and struck out four. Out of the bullpen, senior Academic All- OAC righty David Redovian (Fairlawn/Copley) pitched three and two-thirds innings and allowed three runs on five hits and struck out three. Redovian was the winning pitcher improving his record to 1-0. Junior righty Jon Capadona (North Royalton) earned his first save of the season as he replaced Redovian in the eighth He pitched one and one-third innings of scoreless relief and struck out three. 

Following its trip to Port Charlotte, BW returns north and opens northern play with three games at Pitt-Bradford (Pa.) on March 23-24, including a doubleheader on March 23. The home and OAC opener is on Friday, March 29 when the Jackets host Muskingum University at Heritage Field in a twinbill at 1:00 p.m.
