BW Baseball Team Beats Mt. Union, 10-5, in Game One

ALLIANCE, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated host and Ohio Athletic Conference rival the University of Mount Union, 10-5, today (Saturday, April 6, 2013) in the first game of a doubleheader at the 23rd Street Field.  The second game is set to start in 20 minutes.
   
With its victory, BW improved to 15-4 overall and 4-1 in the OAC. With its loss, Mt. Union drops to 10-7 overall and 2-3 in the OAC.

The Yellow Jackets gained a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and increased their lead to 9-0 with a six-run third. Mt. Union fought back to make it 9-3 with a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and closed to 9-5 with two more in the fifth. BW gained an insurance run in the top of the sixth to make it 10-5.

In the top of the first inning, senior CAPITAL ONE Academic All-American left fielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) led off with a single but was caught stealing. Junior third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) walked and moved to second on a Mt. Union throwing error that put sophomore RF Alex Green (Pickerington/ North) on first base. Gugliotta advanced to third and Green to second when sophomore All-OAC first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North) walked. Gugliotta and Green then scored on a single by All-OAC designated hitter Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) for a 2-0 lead. Chontos would then score on a ground out to make it 3-0.

In the third, Gugliotta walked to lead off the inning but was picked off first base. Green walked, stole second and made it 4-0 when Chontos doubled him home. Then, Ferster was hit by a pitch and Chontos scored when sophomore shortstop Eric Murphy (Brook Park/ Midpark) singled to make it 5-0. After Murphy stole second base, freshman second baseman Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) was hit by a pitch. Ferster scored to make it 6-0 and Murphy reached third when junior catcher Chaz McGrain (Valley City/ Olmsted Falls) reached second base on a fielder's choice and a subsequent throwing error. Murphy and McGrain both scored to increased the lead to 8-0 when senior All-OAC CF Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria) tripled. Neuschaefer scored to make it 9-0 when Toughey reached on an error.

After Mt. Union scored three times in the fourth and twice in the fifth, the Yellow Jackets scored in the top of the sixth to make it 10-5 as Gugliotta walked, moved to second base when Green drew a bases on balls, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored when Murphy singled.

At the plate, Murphy led the way with three hits in four at-bats with a run scored and three runs batted-in. Gugliotta, Green and Chontos each scored twice and Ferster had a pair of RBI.  On the mound, senior All-OAC and All-Mideast Region right-hander Pat Havens (Twinsburg) threw a complete-game six-hitter as he allowed five runs (all earned), struck out five and walked a season-high six batters to improve to 6-1 overall.

BW is back in action on Tuesday, April 9 when it hosts perennial NCAA Division III non-league power The College of Wooster in a single, nine-inning game at Heritage Field in Berea at 4:00 p.m. Then the Yellow Jackets travel to Columbus on Wednesday, April 10 to play OAC rival Capital University in a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. Next Saturday, April 13, BW hosts OAC foe Wilmington College in a twinbill at 1:00 p.m.
