BW Baseball Drops First Game of Doubleheader to Case

CLEVELAND, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team fell to Case Western Reserve University by a final score of 7-6 in the first game of non-conference doubleheader at Nobby's Ballpark.
 
After a scoreless first inning, the Yellow Jackets (24-12) scored a run on two hits when sophomore second baseman Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) doubled down the right field line scoring freshman third baseman Mark Zimmerman (Akron/Green) from first.  Zimmerman reached on a fielder's choice.
 
In the bottom of the third inning, the Spartans (25-11) broke up junior right-hander Jon Capadona's (North Royalton) perfect game when they reached on a throwing error then broke up the no-hit bid in the bottom half of the fourth as they recorded just one hit.
 
Case tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as it plated a run on three hits all with two outs.

BW regained the lead at 2-1 in the top of the seventh as it scored one run on a hit when Zimmerman scored the go ahead run on an infield single and run batted-in (RBI) by sophomore catcher Chaz McGrain (Valley City/Olmsted Falls).  Zimmerman led off the inning being hit by a pitch and moved around the base paths on a sacrifice and a ground out.
 
The Spartans took their first lead of the game in the bottom half of the inning as they plated five runs on five hits to take a 6-2 lead.
 
The Yellow Jackets cut into the lead at 6-4 in the top of the eighth when they scored two runs on three hits.  Senior CAPITAL ONE Academic All-American left fielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) led off the inning, advanced to second when junior third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) was hit by a pitch and scored on the RBI single by sophomore first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North).  BW tacked on another run when Zimmerman knocked in Gugliotta with a RBI single up the middle.
 
The Yellow Jackets tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the ninth with two outs when Toughey singled through the right side, stole second base and scored on the RBI single to left field by Gugliotta.  Freshman pinch runner Jerry Scholle (Hinckley/Medina Highland) went to second when Chontos was hit by a pitch and scored the tying run as right fielder Alex Green (Pickerington/North) reached on a throwing error by the first baseman.
 
BW offense scored six runs on nine hits and was led by Toughey who went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.  Toughey increased his school record for runs scored to 146. Six other Yellow Jackets added a hit.
 
On the mound, Capadona started his fourth game of the season and pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed four runs (all earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk.  Senior righty David Redovian (Fairlawn/Copley) came in relief  of Capadona and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits without getting the final out.  Junior right-hander Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) left the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with two runners on and no outs after pitching 1 1/3 innings.  Fodor (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed one run on two hits with one strikeout and one walk.  Freshman Brandon Cichocki (Walled Lake, Mich./Central) pitched 1/3 of an inning and got one out before surrendering the game-winning single.
 
The Yellow Jackets close out the home portion of their schedule on Wednesday, May 1 when they host cross-town rival John Carroll University in a single nine-inning non-conference game at 4:30.  Prior to the start of the game the team will honor its eight seniors and their parents.  BW ends the 2013 season on Saturday, May 4 when it travels to Westerville for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Otterbein University at 1:00 p.m.
