No. 7 Baseball Closes Out Regular Season with Strong Offensive Showing at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio – The No. 7 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University closed out the regular season with a non-conference game against The College of Wooster. The Yellow Jackets would come away with a 18-9 victory behind a great day from the offense on the Art Murray Field.

BW (31-8) was led by sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) who went 3-for-6 at the plate with two home runs and four runs batted in (RBIs). Senior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference utility player Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate scoring four runs and driving in one RBI. Senior outfielder Andrew Parker (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) and junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) each drove in three RBIs.

Scoring Plays

  • The Yellow Jackets got out to a quick start with a solo home run from Kolenich in the top of the first.
  • Senior All-OAC first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) drove in a run a few batters later with an RBI double.
  • An RBI single from Parker made extended the lead in the top of the first.
  • Clark made it a 4-0 lead after one inning with a sacrifice fly to right.
  • Kolenich made it a 6-0 lead with his second home run in as many at-bats with a two-run homer to left field.
  • Parker got his second RBI of the day on a sac fly to center.
  • Wooster (16-21-1) got on the board in the third with a solo home run from sophomore outfielder Ben Carroll.
  • BW responded in the top of the fourth with Parker's third RBI of the game on a single into left.
  • Clark followed that up with his second RBI of the afternoon after reaching on a fielder's choice to the shortstop.
  • Senior All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) and Kolenich each hit an RBI single to make it a 11-1 lead.
  • Senior All-American infielder Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) made it a 13-1 lead with a two-run double to left field.
  • The final run of the fourth inning for the Yellow Jackets came off the bat of Guggenheim who knocked in Vonderhaar with a double down the left field line.
  • The Fighting Scots got one run back in the fourth as the scored off a throwing error.
  • Wooster got the offense going again in the fifth inning with the first run coming off sophomore outfielder Leo Widtmann getting hit by a pitch, driving in a run.
  • Senior utility Dean Brown reached on a fielder's choice and drove in a run. Another run would come around to score off a throwing error on the play to make it a 14-5 game.
  • The Fighting Scots got another run off an RBI single from senior outfielder Jack Whitehouse.
  • Senior catcher Riley McErlean continued the inning with an RBI double down the left field line.
  • Carroll got his second RBI of the day off an RBI single.
  • The final run of the fifth inning came from junior infielder Eli Westrick who drove in a run with a fielder's choice and cut the lead to 14-9.
  • BW responded in the seventh with Clark's three RBI of the game off a double down the right field line.
  • The Yellow Jackets added three more runs in the ninth with senior catcher JT Mazula (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) driving in a run on a bases loaded walk and two more runs scoring off wild pitches.

On the Mound

  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Dylan Snyder (Stow/Akron Archbishop Hoban) picked up the start and went four innings allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits, four walks and striking out one batter.
  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Seve Cantini (Roaming Shores/Jefferson Area) went a third of an inning in relief allowing six runs, five earned, off two hits and two walks with a strike out.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Matt Sabin (Mentor) went two and third innings in relief allowing an unearned run on six hits and two walks while striking out a pair.
  • Junior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Gordon Seger (Rome/Grand Valley) went a scoreless inning and a third allowing one hit and striking out a pair.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Clay Anderson (Broadview Heights/Trinity) closed out the final inning allowing one hit.

Beyond the Box Score

  • The 20 hits by the BW offense are the most hits in a game this season.
  • Clark is back to being tied for third in Division III with 22 hit by pitches.
  • Guggenheim set a career-best going 5-for-5 in the game.
  • The four double plays turned by the Yellow Jackets are the most in a game this season.

BW returns to action on Thursday, May 11th when they host the OAC Tournament at Fisher Field. The four team, double-elimination tournament will run from May 11-May 13. The No. 1 seeded Yellow Jackets open the tournament taking on No. 4 seeded crosstown rival John Carroll University at 3:00 p.m.
