Baseball Moves Into Top 5 in First D3baseball Top-25 Poll

Minneapolis, Minn. – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team (5-1) went 2-1 this past weekend to jump five spots on the D3baseball.com Top-25 poll. The Yellow Jackets are ranked No. 5 in the latest poll.

With the No. 5 ranking, BW has now tied the highest ranking in program history. The last time the Yellow Jackets achieved the No. 5 ranking was in the 2015 NCAA Division III World Series.

BW picked up their first win of the weekend over No. 17 nationally-ranked State University of New York – Oswego on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets picked up a commanding 12-5 victory with senior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference utility Ryan Guggenheim (Solon), senior outfielder Andrew Parker (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) and sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) all picking two RBIs in the game. On the mound, senior right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) threw five innings of relief allowing only one run and striking out nine.

On Sunday, BW split their doubleheader falling to Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College in game one and knocking off No. 17 Oswego State in 10 innings in game 2. Against the Presidents, senior All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) led the way with three RBIs.  Parker went 2-4 on the dish and scored a game-high four runs. Senior catcher JT Mazula (Pittsbugh, Pa./North Hills) went 2-2 at the plate and added two runs in the 10-9 defeat.

In game 2, the Yellow Jackets against the Lakers, picking up their second win of the weekend against the nationally ranked opponent. Junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) went 2-4 in the game and drove in three runs, including the game-winning RBI double in the 10th inning. Guggenheim went 2-5 including hitting his home run of the season. On the mound, freshman right-handed pitcher Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) picked up his win of his collegiate career as he threw two and two-thirds scoreless innings in a relief giving up just two hits and striking out five.

BW is back in action on their annual Spring Break Trip to the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. The Yellow Jackets take the field on Saturday, March 4th for a doubleheader at Centennial Park on Field #9. In game 1, they will take on Rhode Island College at 10:30 a.m. and they will follow that up with their second game of the day as they take on Misericordia (Pa.) University at 2:00 p.m.
