No. 12 Baseball Advances to Super Regional with Victory over Regional Host Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio – The No. 12 nationally-ranked and second-seeded Baldwin Wallace University baseball team punched their ticket to the Super Regional with a 17-2 victory over No. 9 nationally-ranked and top-seeded Denison University at the Big Red Baseball Field at Denison University.

BW (33-10) was led at the plate by senior All-American Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) who went 4-for-5 with five runs scored and three runs batted in (RBIs). Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) added three runs scored and four RBIs.

Scoring Plays

  • The Yellow Jackets on the board in the bottom with Vonderhaar's second first inning home run of the Regional Tournament.
  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) extended the lead to 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to center.
  • The Yellow Jackets added five runs in the third inning, which was started off by a senior All-OAC first baseman Castillo with an RBI single.
  • Senior catcher JT Mazula (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) picked up an RBI on a walk.
  • Freshman infielder Matt Terzola (Uniontown/Archbishop Hoban) knocked in two runs with an RBI single to center to make it a 7-0 game.
  • The final run of the third came on Capolupo's second sacrifice fly of the day.
  • BW added one run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly from senior outfielder Andrew Parker (Toledo/Central Catholic) to make it a 9-0 game.
  • Denison (36-10) got on the board in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly from junior first baseman Noah Leib.
  • Senior All-OAC utility Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) picked up an RBI in the fifth with a walk.
  • Castillo followed that up with a two-run single between first and second and made it a 12-1 ballgame.
  • Junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) continued the hot streak with an RBI single of his.
  • Parker drove in a run in the next at-bat with an RBI groundout.
  • Mazula finished off the fifth with an RBI triple to make a 15-1 led for the Yellow Jackets after five innings.
  • The BW bats stayed hot into the sixth inning with an RBI double from Vonderhaar.
  • Vonderhaar would come around to score on a Castillo RBI single.
  • The Big Red scored one more run in the eighth off an error.

On the Mound

  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Seve Cantini (Roaming Shores/Jefferson Area) picked up the start and secured the win with five innings pitched. He allowed one run on six hits and one walk. He also went on to strike out four batters.
  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Dylan Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) came into relief and went four innings. He allowed an unearned run on three hits and a walk. He struck out one batter.

The Yellow Jackets will head to the NCAA Regional Tournament and take on Aurora (Ill.) University. The NCAA Super Regional is a best of three series over the course of May 26-27. The location of the Super Regional is to be determined.
