BEREA, Ohio – The No. 5 Baldwin Wallace University baseball team picked up another Ohio Athletic Conference sweep. BW picked up two wins against Heidelberg University on the Fisher Field. The Yellow Jackets picked up an 11-0 victory in game 1 and finished off the afternoon with a 7-3 win in game 2.
Game 1
BW (24-5, 9-2 OAC) was led by senior left-handed pitcher Nik Baldis (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) who threw his second straight complete game going nine scoreless innings allowing five hits and striking out nine. Senior All-American infielder Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) went 3-for-4 at the plate driving in two runs batted in (RBIs) and scoring two runs. Junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) went 2-for-3 at the dish knocking in four runs on his first career grand slam.
Scoring Plays
- The Yellow Jackets got the action started in the third inning with an RBI single from sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward).
- In the next at bat, Clark cleared the bases with a grand slam over the right field fence.
- Vonderhaar came around to score on a double play to make it a 6-0 game after three innings.
- BW made it a 7-0 game in the fourth with an RBI single coming off the bat of Vonderhaar.
- Vonderhaar picked up his second RBI of the game in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to center.
- Senior All-OAC first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) extended the lead with an RBI single to left.
- Castillo came around to score on a wild pitch and make it a 10-0 game in the sixth.
- The final run came off the bat of sophomore outfielder Brandon Gelpi (Monroeville, Pa./Central Catholic) in the eighth with a sacrifice fly.
On the Mound
- Baldis pitched his second consecutive complete game as he shut down Heidelberg (12-17, 4-7 OAC) and limited them to five hits and struck out nine batters.
Game 2
BW (25-5) picked up their second win on the afternoon behind Clark who knocked in two more RBIs and went 2-for-4 at the plate. Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) returned to the mound and went seven and two-thirds allowing three runs. Kolenich went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.
Scoring Plays
- The Yellow Jackets once again started the scoring in the third with Vonderhaar and Castillo picking up RBIs on walks and senior Academic All-OAC utility Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) knocking in one with a sacrifice fly.
- Clark picked up two RBIs with a single to right center in the sixth.
- Kolenich came around to score in the sixth on a double play which made it a 6-0 game.
- BW's final run came from senior outfielder Nick Stoltz (Geneva) scoring on a wild pitch.
- Heidelberg (12-18, 4-8 OAC) got on the board in the eight on an RBI single from Andrew Pokley and a two-run double from Cort Kramer to make it a 7-3 final.
On the Mound
- Gabe returned to the mound and picked up the win after going seven and two-thirds innings allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out 11.
- Sophomore right-handed pitcher Seve Cantini (Roaming Shores/Jefferson Area) closed out the final inning and a third allowing two hits and striking out a pair.
Beyond the Box Score
- Baldis is now tied for second in the OAC after pitching two complete games this season.
- Baldis also leads the team with 41.1 innings pitched on the season.
- Clark is once again tied for Division III lead after getting hit by a pitch on the afternoon. He now has been hit by a pitch 20 times on the season.
- With an 11-0 victory in game 1, the Yellow Jackets now stand at two shutouts on the season. The last time the team had two shutouts came back in 2018 when they had three shutout victories.
