No. 5 Baseball Splits Doubleheader at First Day of the Snowbird Classic

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The No. 5 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team picked up a 7-6 walkoff win in game one on the day when sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) snuck one by the shortstop to cap off a four run ninth inning against Rhode Island College at Centennial Park on Field #9. On the same field, the Yellow Jackets couldn't find another late surge as Misericordia (Pa.) University won 15-9 in 10 innings. 

Game 1

BW (6-1) was led at the plate by senior outfielder Andrew Parker (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) who went 1-3 and tied things up in the ninth with a three-run homer. Senior All-American first baseman Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) went 1-4 with a two-run homer.

Scoring Plays

  • In the first inning, Rhode Island (1-3) jumped out to a four-run lead highlighted by a two run homer from Sean Helfrich.
  • The Anchorman added another run in the second inning with an RBI single from Helfrich.
  • The Yellow Jackers responded in the fourth with a two-run homer from Vonderhaar and a sacrifice fly from senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School).
  • In the ninth, Rhode Island regained a three-run lead with a solo homer from Joey Coro.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Parker hit a three-run homer to center with no outs to tie things up at 6-6.
  • Three batters later, Kolenich drilled one past the shortstop to give BW a 7-6 victory.

On the Mound

  • Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) threw 6 innings giving up eight hits and four runs while striking out eight batters.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Gordon Seger (Rome/Grand Valley) threw two innings in relief giving up one hit and striking out two.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Drew Schaly (Ashland) closed out the ninth as he picked up the first win of his collegiate career. He threw one inning allowing two hits and one run with one strikeout. 

Game 2 

Parker continued his hot day at the plate in Florida by going 3-5 at the plate, hitting two home runs, including a grand slam and adding a double. He drove home five runs and scored three runs. Sophomore utility Joey Marousek (North Royalton) went 2-4 in his first start knocking in one RBI and scoring a run.

Scoring Plays

  • Misericordia (2-2) scored first in the second inning off an error.
  • In the third, the Cougars scored another run with a solo home run by Brady Madden.
  • BW (6-2) responded in the bottom of the third when Marousek knocked in a run with an RBI single.
  • Misericordia scored three in the top of the fifth off a Brock Bollinger home run and RBI singles by Brendan Gray and Jack Regenye.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Parker hit his first home run in the game with a solo shot to right. 
  • In the sixth, the Yellow Jackets would post seven runs all with two outs. Parker kicked things with a grand slam to center to give BW a 6-5 lead. Two more runs were scored on wild pitches and junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) would pick up a RBI after being hit by a pitch.
  • The Cougars brought it to within a run in the eight as Madden hit his second home run of the day scoring three runs.
  • In the ninth, Connor Maryniak hit a solo home run that tied things at 9-9.
  • In the 10th, Misericordia picked up six runs. The scoring started with a bases loaded walk, followed by a Bollinger two run single, another run would score on a balk, followed by a run scoring on an error and then one last sacrifice fly gave them a 15-9 advantage.

On the Mound

  • Freshman right-handed pitcher Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) picked up the start going four and two-thirds innings allowing five runs on five hits and four walks. He also struck out five batters.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) went three and two-thirds innings in relief allowing four runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Aidan Bennett (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) threw two-thirds of an innings in relief. He walked two batters and allowed three runs with a strikeout.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Kyle Maruna (Medina) faced two batters and gave up one hit and a walk while allowing two runs.
  • Freshman left-handed pitcher Lino Valletta (Chesterland/West Geagua) threw two-thirds innings and allowed one inning.
  • Senior left-handed pitcher Justin Sekerak (Avon Lake/St. Ignatius) finished off the last out of the game and gave up one hit and one walk.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Sunday, March 5 when it takes on Kean (N.J.) University at South County Regional Park at 12:00 p.m.
