No. 3 Baseball Splits OAC Opening Doubleheader Against Ohio Northern

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 3 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team opened the Ohio Athletic Conference portion of the schedule by splitting a doubleheader against Ohio Northern. The first game was won by Ohio Northern with a final score of 9-6. BW picked up a 11-6 victory in the second game on the Fisher Field. 

Game 1

BW (13-4) was led by senior All-American infielder Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) who went 3-for-5 with a double and four runs batted in (RBIs). Senior All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) and sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) each with 2-for-4 with an RBI. Out of the bullpen, freshman left-handed pitcher Brit Kostura (Tequesta, Fla./Jupiter Christian School) went two and two-thirds innings allowing just one hit and striking out three.

Scoring Plays

  • Ohio Northern (11-5) started out hit in the first inning with two runs on RBI singles from senior first baseman Nate Webb and senior catcher Vinny Sclafani.
  • Vonderhaar picked up his first RBI in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single.
  • In the third, Vonderhaar gave the Yellow Jackets the lead with a two-run double to center.
  • Vonderhaar extended the lead in the fifth with another RBI single and gave BW a 4-2 lead.
  • The Polar Bears responded in the sixth with an RBI double from junior infielder Corey Jeanor.
  • Sophomore outfielder Joey Kennedy hit a two run-single to give the Polar Bears a 5-4 lead.
  • Junior utility Logan Stevens hit a three-run to extend the Ohio Northern lead to 8-4.
  • The Polar Bears closed off a seven run sixth inning with an RBI double from Webb.
  • The Yellow Jackets cut into the Ohio Northern with an RBI double from Capolupo.
  • Kolenich followed that up with a sacrifice fly to make it 9-6 in favor of the Polar Bears.

On the Mound

  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Dylan Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) went four innings allowing two runs on four innings and striking out a batter.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Matt Sabin (Mentor) went one inning in relief allowing three runs on three hits and two walks. He picked up the loss in the contest and now has a season record of two wins and two losses.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Clay Anderson (Broadview Heights/Trinity) went a third of an inning allowing three runs on two hits and striking out a batter.
  • Freshman left-handed pitcher Carson Collins (South Bend, Ind./Saint Joseph's) went two-thirds of an inning allowing a run on two hits.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Dan Petrouskie (Seaford, N.Y./IMG Academy) went a third of an inning and give up a hit and a walk with a strikeout.
  • Kostura closed out the final two and two-thirds innings allowing a hit and striking out three in his first collegiate appearance.

Game 2

BW (14-4) was led by Capolupo who went 3-for-5 with a double and home run with two runs scored and six RBIs. Vonderhaar went 1-for-2 with a walk and two hit by pitches. He also scored two runs and drove in two RBIs. 

Scoring Plays

  • Ohio Northern (11-6) jumped out to another first inning lead with an RBI single from senior infielder Jacob Wenning.
  • Webb extended the lead with a two-run homer that gave the Polar Bears a 3-0 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets got on the board with Vonderhaar scoring on an error.
  • Capolupo cleared the bases with three-run double and tied things up in the bottom second at 4-4.
  • Webb picked up another RBI with a double in the fifth and gave Ohio Northern a 5-4 lead.
  • The Polar Bears extended their lead to 6-4 scoring off a drop third strike.
  • Senior Academic All-OAC utility Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) made it a 6-5 game with an RBI double down the left field line.
  • Vonderhaar gave BW a 7-6 lead with a two-run single in the bottom sixth.
  • Capolupo extended the lead with a three-run homer to right center in the seventh that gave the Yellow Jackets a 10-6.
  • Senior outfielder Nick Stoltz (Geneva) picked up an RBI after reaching on a fielder's choice and giving BW a 11-6 lead in the eighth.

On the Mound

  • Freshman pitcher Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) picked up the start going an inning and allowing four runs on three hits and striking out one.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) went five and two-thirds innings in relief allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out seven.
  • Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) went two and one-thirds scoreless innings allowing one hit and striking out four.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Tuesday, March 28th when the team travels to Grove City, Pa. for a non-conference game against Grove City (Pa.) College on the R. Jack Behringer Field at 3:00 p.m.
