Mohnickey’s Walk Off Home Run Lifts No. 4 Baseball to Victory Over Oberlin in Home Opener

BEREA, Ohio – Senior catcher Mark Mohnickey Jr. (North Ridgeville/St. Edward) hit a walk off home run to right field that lifted the No. 4 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team to a 12-11 victory over Oberlin College in a non-conference on the Fisher Field. 

BW (12-2) was led by Mohnickey who went 3-5 with the walk off home run. Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) went 2-3 with two runs scored and a two-run home run. Junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) went 2-3 with a solo home run, three runs scored and had a run batted in (RBI). 

Scoring Plays

  • Oberlin (1-3) got on the board first with sophomore outfielder Jake Blozy scoring as  senior infielder Yianni Gardner stole second.
  • Senior infielder Jacob Thompson hit an RBI single to give the Yeoman a 2-0 lead in the first.
  •  Senior All-American first baseman Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) tied things up in the bottom half of the inning with a deep home run over the scoreboard in left field.
  • The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI from senior All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) on a fielder's choice.
  • BW extended the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the third with a solo home run by Clark and an RBI single from senior Academic All-OAC utility Ryan Guggenheim (Solon).
  • The Yeomen responded in the fourth with an RBI by junior outfielder Jake Freed on a fielder's choice.
  • In the fifth, Oberlin regained the lead after four runs in the fifth highlighted by a two-run homer from sophomore infielder Ethan Hurwitz.
  • Guggenheim cut the lead to one with his second RBI on the day with a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth.
  • An RBI single from sophomore infielder Ryan Kaestle gave the Yeoman a two-run lead in the sixth.
  • The Yellow Jackets responded right away in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly from sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward).
  • Oberlin used a three run seventh inning to take an 11-7 lead.
  • Castillo hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Yeomen lead to 11-9.
  • Senior first basemen Carl Pennington (Wadsworth) reached on a throwing error by the shortship which allowed two runs to score and tied things at 11-11.
  • In the bottom of the ninth with one out, Mohnickey sent a deep fly ball over the right field fence to give BW a 12-11 victory. 

On the Mound

  • Senior left-handed pitcher Nik Baldis (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) picked up the start going two innings allowing two hits and two runs with a strikeout.
  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Dylan Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) picked up the next two innings giving up an unearned run and a hit.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Matt Sabin (Mentor) pitched two-thirds of an inning allowing four runs with three hits.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) pitched an inning and a third allowing two hits and a run.
  • Freshman left-handed pitcher Carson Collins (South Bend, Ind./Saint Joseph's) went a third of an inning allowing one hit and one unearned run.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Aidan Bennett (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) pitched two-thirds of an inning allowing a hit and two unearned runs.
  • Freshman right-handed pitcher Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) pitched a scoreless eighth inning allowing one hit.
  • Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Id. Picked up the win to improve to 3-0 pitching a scoreless ninth inning allowing one hit and striking out one batter.
