BEREA, Ohio – The No. 4 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team cruised past Muskingum University for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep on the Fisher Field. BW took game one by a final score of 11-3 and it also took game 2 by a score of 14-2.
Game 1
BW (21-5, 7-2 OAC) was led by senior All-OAC first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) who went 1-for-4 at the plate with a grand slam in the first inning. Senior All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) went 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs batted in (RBIs) and two runs scored.
Scoring Plays
- The Yellow Jackets got on the board first with a no doubt grand slam from Castillo to right field.
- Muskingum (14-10, 4-5 OAC) got on the board in the third inning with an RBI single from freshman infielder Sam Palmieri.
- BW responded in the fourth with an RBI groundout from Capolupo.
- An RBI double from sophomore infielder Weston Melick gave the Fighting Muskies their second run of the game with the Yellow Jackets still leading 5-2.
- A five run fifth inning gave BW an eight-run lead highlighted by an RBI double from senior catcher JT Mazula (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and an RBI single from Capolupo.
- Muskingum got their final run of the day off an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Austin Lippolis.
- The Yellow Jackets regained an eight-run lead in the seventh inning off an RBI single from sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward).
On the Mound
- Sophomore right-handed pitcher Dylan Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) got the start and win after going six innings and allowing three runs on six hits and striking out four.
- Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kade Swisher (Berea/Berea-Midpark) threw two innings in relief allowing a hit and striking out one.
- Junior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Gordon Seger (Rome/Grand Valley) closed out the game allowing two hits in one inning pitched.
Game 2
BW (22-5, 8-2 OAC) was led by senior All-American infielder Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) who went 3-for-4 at the dish with two RBIs and two runs scored. Kolenich knocked in three RBIs and junior catcher Mark Mohnickey, Jr. (North Ridgeville/St. Edward) went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored.
Scoring Plays
- The Yellow Jackets ran out to a 3-0 lead in the first with a two-run double from Vonderhaar and an RBI single from Guggenheim.
- A two-run double to left center from Kolenich gave BW a 5-0 lead in the second.
- Marosuek laid down a sacrifice bunt in the third and reached on a throwing error by the pitcher which allowed Guggenheim to score from second.
- A five-run fourth inning made it a 10-0 lead for BW with an RBI single Castillo, a two-run single from Marousek and a two-run double from Mohnickey.
- Muskingum (14-11, 4-6 OAC) got on the board with junior outfielder Wyatt Reeder scoring on a wild pitch.
- BW responded in the sixth inning with an RBI fielder's choice from Capolupo.
- The Yellow Jackets got two more runs in the eighth with Kolenich getting an RBI after being hit by a pitch and junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) drove home a run with a fielder's choice.
- The Fighting Muskies closed things out in the ninth with an RBI ground out from Reeder.
On the Mound
- Senior right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) picked up the start and the win after going six innings and allowing a run on two hits while striking out eight.
- Sophomore right-handed pitcher Seve Cantini (Roaming Shores/Jefferson Area) went two innings in relief walking one and striking out a pair.
- Freshman right-handed pitcher Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) closed out the game with an inning pitched allowing a run on one hit.
Beyond the Box Score
- After being hit by two pitches on the afternoon, Clark is tied for second in Division III with 17 HBPs.
- With 51 hits on the year, Castillo is tied for 18th in Division III in hits.
- With a .344 batting average as a team, BW stands at 17th in all of Division III.
