No. 5 Baseball Sweeps OAC Doubleheader at Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The No. 5 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team picked up two wins over Wilmington College in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader. In game 1, the bullpen led BW to a 5-2 victory in 12 innings. In game 2, the Yellow Jackets bats continued the momentum to pick up a 10-1 victory.

Game 1

BW (16-4, 2-1 OAC) was led by the bullpen who pitched nine scoreless innings. Senior right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) and freshman right-handed pitcher Tyler Walker (Fairlwan/Copley) went the nine innings and allowed seven hits and struck out five batters. Junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) went 3-for-6 at the plate with two runs scored and the two-run double that gave the Yellow Jackets in the 12th inning.

Scoring Plays

  • Wilmington (8-12, 0-3 OAC) got on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from sophomore infielder Dominic Depa.
  • The Quakers extended their lead in the second with another RBI single, coming from junior All-OAC outfielder Tyler Shaneyfelt.
  • BW was able to get on the board in the fifth with an RBI single from sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward).
  • The Yellow Jackets tied things up in the eighth with a sacrifice fly from senior Academic All-OAC utility Ryan Guggenheim (Solon).
  • In the 12th inning, Clark gave BW its first lead of the game with a two-run double into the left center gap.
  • Senior All-OAC first basemen Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) extended the lead with an RBI single that scored Clark.

On the Mound

  • Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) went three innings allowing two runs on four hits with a strikeout.
  • Walker came into relief going four and one-thirds scoreless innings allowing five hits and striking out three batters.
  • Miller finished off the rest game going four and two-thirds innings with two hits and two strikeouts. He also picked up his third win of the season.

Beyond the Box Score

  • Miller is the third Yellow Jackets pitcher to eclipse reach the three win mark this season.
  • With his two-run double in the 12th, Clark is the fourth BW batter to knock in over 20 runs batted in (RBIs).
  • Kolenich has now hit safely in 14 straight games.

Game 2

BW (17-4, 3-1 OAC) was led by freshman infielder Matt Terzola (Uniontown/Archbishop Hoban) who went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs. Guggenheim had a game-high three runs scored. Kolenich had a game-high three RBIs.

Scoring Plays

  • Terzola got the Yellow Jackets on the board with an RBI single in the second.
  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) got his own RBI single in the next at-bat to give BW a 2-0 lead.
  • Kolenich kept the momentum going with a two-run single to center.
  • In the third inning, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two runs scored on an error.
  • In the fifth, senior catcher DJ Doria (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) hit a two-run double as a pinch hitter and BW took an 8-0 lead.
  • Senior catcher JT Mazula (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) picked up an RBI on an infield single in the fifth.
  • Capolupo picked up his second RBI in the fifth with a sacrifice fly.
  • Wilmington (8-13, 0-4 OAC) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a RBI single from Shaneyfelt.
  • The Yellow Jackets extended their lead in the ninth with an RBI single from Terzola and an RBI double from Kolenich.
  • Shaneyfelt picked up his second RBI of the game in the ninth with a sacrifice fly.

On the Mound

  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Dylan Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) went five innings after getting the start. He allowed a run on three hits and struck out four batters.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Aidan Bennett (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) went an inning in relief allowing a hit, walking two batters and striking out three.
  • Freshman left-handed pitcher Brit Kostura (Tequesta, Fla./Jupiter Christian School) went two innings in relief allowing a hit and walk.
  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Seve Cantini (Roaming Shores/Jefferson Area) finished the game pitching an inning and allowing a run on two hits with a strikeout.

Beyond the Box Score

  • Terzola is now hitting over .500 in 23 at-bats this season.
  • Kolenich continues to extend his hitting streak which stands at 15 games.
  • Clark now has nine game hitting streak.
  • Kolenich and Castillo lead the OAC in hits with 42 and 41, respectively.
  • Terzola's two RBIs were the first in his collegiate career.
  • As a team, the BW offense leads the OAC in hits, runs, RBIs, doubles and sluggind percentage.
