No. 5 Baseball Takes Down Kean (N.J.)

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – The No. 5 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team took down Kean (N.J.) University in their second day at the Snowbird Classic by a final score of 10-9 at South County Regional Park. 

BW (7-2) was led by the top of the order with senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) who went 2-5 with three RBIs and scored a run, sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) went 3-5 with a two-run homer and three RBIs and junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) went 2-5 with a solo homer.

Scoring Plays

  • The Yellow Jackets got on the board first in the third with an RBI single down the right field line by Capolupo.
  • In the next at-bat Kolenich went deep to left center to give BW a 3-0 lead and Clark followed that up with a solo homer as they went back-to-back.
  • Kean (8-3) responded in the bottom half of the inning starting with an RBI double from Phil Marcantonio.
  • In the next at-bat, Gianni Marano went deep to center with a three-run homer.
  • The Cougars took a 5-4 lead on a bases loaded walk to Kyle Adorno.
  • Kean extended their lead in the fourth with a solo shot into the woods behind the left center field walk by Marcantonio.
  • The Yellow Jackets offense regained the lead in the top of the sixth with sophomore utility Joey Marousek (North Royalton) reaching on an error and scoring a run.
  • Capolupo knocked in two with a single to right center as BW took a 7-6 lead.
  • In the eighth, an infield single from Kolenich drove home another run to give the Yellow Jackets an 8-6 lead.
  • To start off the ninth, senior All-OAC first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) sent a no-doubter to right center for to extend the BW lead to 9-6.
  • The Yellow Jackets continued to stay hot at the dish, this time senior outfield Andrew Parker (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) continued his torrid start to the Snowbird Classic with another no-doubt home run to right field.
  • The Cougars rallied back in the ninth for three runs, picking up a run on an RBI single by Brett Hilsheimer, Caleb Rodriguez followed that up with an RBI double and Adorno picked up an RBI on a groundout.

On the Mound

  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Dylan Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) picked up the start going three innings and allowing five runs on eight hits and striking out four.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Matt Sabin (Mentor) went five and a third innings in relief allowing four runs on five hits and striking out four. Sabin picked up his second win of the season and is now 2-1 on the year.
  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kade Swisher (Berea/Berea-Midpark) finished off the final two-thirds of an inning and allowed one hit.

The Yellow Jackets return to the field on Monday, March 6 when they continue playing in the Snowbird Classic against Saint John's (Minn.) College at Centennial Park on Field #9 in Port Charlotte, Fla. at 10:30 a.m.
