No. 12 Baseball Advances to First Final Four With Win Over Misericordia (Pa.)

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The No. 12 nationally ranked and fifth-seeded Baldwin Wallace University baseball team took down Misericordia (Pa.) University by a final score of 13-8 at PG Cares Field inside Veterans Memorial Stadium. With the victory, Baldwin Wallace has secured their place with the final four teams in the NCAA Division III College World Series.

BW (38-11) was led at the plate by senior All-American first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three runs batted in (RBIs). Senior outfielder Andrew Parker (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) hit a home run for the third consecutive game. Senior All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) added two RBIs.

Scoring Plays

  • Castillo got the action started in the first inning with a two-run single into left center.
  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference utility Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) added an RBI single to center in the following at-bat.
  • Parker made it 6-0 game with a no-doubt home run to right.
  • Capolupo capped off the seven run first inning with an RBI double into the left center gap.
  • Misericordia (40-15) got one run back in the bottom half of the inning as senior outfielder Grant McIlhenney scored off an error.
  • Guggenheim picked up his second RBI of the game in the second inning with another RBI single to center.
  • The Cougars responded in the second inning with an RBI single from senior infielder John Sanfilippo.
  • Misericordia made it an 8-3 game after three innings with an RBI single from senior outfielder Joe Comins.
  • An RBI single and RBI double from the Cougars made it 8-5 after four innings.
  • The Yellow Jackets go back in the scoring column in the fifth inning with Parker coming home on a wild pitch.
  • Capolupo added two more runs to make it an 11-5 game with a two-run single into right.
  • Misericordia responded the bottom half of the inning with two RBI singles and cut it to 11-7.
  • BW added an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI single from freshman infielder Matt Terzola (Uniontown/Archbishop Hoban).
  • The Yellow Jackets added another run in the eighth to make it 13-7 off an RBI single from Castillo.
  • The Cougars added one run in the ninth with an RBI groundout.

On the Mound

  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Seve Cantini (Roaming Shores/Jefferson Area) picked up the start and went two innings allowing two runs on three hits and a walk.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Garret McLeod (Medina) went one and third innings in relief allowing three runs on four hits.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Clay Anderson (Broadview Heights/Trinity) went one and two-thirds innings in relief allowing two runs on three hits.
  • Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) went two innings in relief allowing one hit. Miller picked up the win and improves his record to 11-0 on the season.
  • Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) closed out the final two innings allowing one run on one hit and a walk. 

Records Fall

  • In Game 1 of the College World Series, senior All-American infielder Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen) broke the single season doubles record with 21.
  • The 2023 BW team now holds the record for wins, at-bats, hits, singles, innings pitched and putouts.
  • The Yellow Jackets have officially secured their place in the final four teams. This is the first final four appearance in program history.

BW advances to take on Johns Hopkins (Md.) University on Monday, June 5th. The Yellow Jackets will need to win two games to advance to the National Championship. Game one on the day will begin at 11:00 EST with the if necessary, game two beginning at 5:30 EST. Both games will take place on PG Cares Field inside Veterans Memorial Stadium.
