No. 4 Baseball Splits OAC Doubleheader at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The No. 4 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on the road at the University of Mount Union on the Rafeld-Rogers Field. The Yellow Jackets fell in extra innings in game 1, falling 9-8 in 10 innings. They would rebound in game 2 to pick up a 10-2 victory.

Game 1

BW (19-5, 5-2 OAC) was led by senior All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) who went 2-for-5 at the plate with two solo home runs. Senior All-American infielder Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) went 4-for-5 at the plate with a run batted in (RBI) and run scored.

Scoring Plays

  • Capolupo got the scoring in the first at-bat of the game with a solo home run to right field.
  • Later in the first inning, another run would come around to score with senior All-OAC first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) reaching on an error.
  • An RBI single from sophomore utility Joey Marousek (North Royalton) and a two-run single from Mark Mohnickey, Jr(North Ridgeville/St. Edward) put the Yellow Jackets up 5-0 at the end of the first.
  • Vonderhaar continued the scoring in the second with two out RBI single to center.
  • Castillo knocked in Vonderhaar on the next at-bat to give BW a 7-0 lead in the top of second.
  • Mount Union (16-8, 4-3 OAC) got on the board in the bottom of the single with an RBI single from junior catcher Joe Procop.
  • They added another run with an RBI coming from junior infielder Andrew Witte on a fielder's choice.
  • Senior All-American outfielder Zachary Mazza got an RBI after getting hit by a pitch to make it a 7-3 game after two innings.
  • The Purple Raiders got back on the board in the fifth with a sacrifice fly from sophomore infielder Alex Stegman.
  • A two-run single from senior outfielder Eric Schilling made it a one run game in the seventh.
  • Junior infielder Jaired Lehman knocked in one on an RBI single and another run came around to score off a throwing error which gave Mount Union an 8-7 lead in the seventh.
  • The Yellow Jackets tied things back up in the top of eighth as Capolupo hit his second home tun on the day,
  • The Purple Raiders walked it off in the 10th inning with a solo home run from senior Academic All-OAC outfielder Lucius Ivory.

On the Mound

  • Freshman right-handed pitcher Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) picked up the start going an inning and two-thirds and allowing three runs on two hits. He also struck out two batters with two walks.
  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kade Swisher (Berea/Berea-Midpark) came into relief going four and two-third innings allowing four runs on four hits a walk and striking out three.
  • Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) pitched an inning allowing an unearned run with two hits, two walks and striking out one.
  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Seve Cantini (Roaming Shores/Jefferson Area) went two innings allowing a run on two hits and striking out one.

Beyond the Box Score

  • This is the first game all season that all nine starters recorded a hit.
  • Capolupo's two home runs in a game sets a new career-high.
  • Vonderhaar is now top five in the OAC in RBIs with 27 on the season.

Game 2 

BW (20-5, 6-2 OAC) was led by senior left-handed pitcher Nik Baldis (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) who pitched the first complete game of his career allowing just two runs on seven hits and striking out seven. At the plate, senior catcher JT Mazula (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) went 5-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman infielder Matt Terzola (Uniontown/Archbishop Hoban) led with three RBIs and Castillo led with four runs scored.

Scoring Plays

  • Mazula and Terzola got the Yellow Jackets on the board in the second inning with RBI singles.
  • Terzola picked up his second RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly in the fourth to give BW a 3-0 lead.
  • Sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) extended the lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Yellow Jackets doubled their lead in the seventh with RBI singles from Marousek, Mazula and TerzolaMazula would come around to score on a throwing error on the catcher to score the final run of the inning.
  • Mount Union (16-9, 4-4 OAC) got on the board in the seventh with a home run from Mazza.
  • BW continued to add onto the lead in the eight with a sacrifice fly from Marousek and Castillo came around to score on a wild pitch.
  • The Purple Raiders would score one more in the ninth with a solo home run from junior catcher Logan Bell.

On the Mound

  • Baldis was the only pitcher needed as he went nine innings, allowing just the two runs on seven hits. He also had notched seven strikeouts.

Beyond the Box Score

  • Baldis is the only Yellow Jacket this season to pitch a complete game. He also set a career-high with nine innings pitched.
  • Kolenich's hitting streak came to an end after he hit safely in 18 games.
  • Castillo now leads the team with a 13-game hitting streak.
