No. 5 Baseball Cages Cardinals in Sweep

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The No. 5 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team pulled off another Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep taking down Otterbein University on the Fishbaugh Field. The Yellow Jackets picked up a 17-9 victory in game 1 and a 3-0 shutout victory in game 2.

Game 1

BW (26-5, 11-2 OAC) was led by senior catcher JT Mazula (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) who went 2-for-4 at the dish with two runs scored and a team leading three runs batted in (RBIs). Six Yellow Jackets finished the game with two RBIs a piece. Senior All-American infielder Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) led the way with four runs scored. Senior Academic All-OAC utility Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) and senior infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) each led the team with three hits.

Scoring Plays

  • Vonderhaar got the action started with an RBI walk.
  • Senior All-OAC first basemen Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) knocked in a run on the next at bat with a sacrifice fly to center.
  • Mazula made it a 4-0 game with a two-run single up the middle.
  • Freshman infielder Matt Terzola (Uniontown/Archbishop Hoban) knocked in another run with an RBI single of his own.
  • Senior All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) made it a 7-0 game with a two-run triple to deep center field.
  • BW extended the lead in the third with an RBI single from Kolenich.
  • Otterbein (22-10, 7-6 OAC) got on the board in the third with a three-run homer to left off the bat of junior All-OAC infielder Brayden Quincel.
  • Mazula picked up his third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to left in the fourth.
  • The Cardinals responded in the bottom half of the inning with senior All-OAC infielder Noah Sprowls scoring on a wild pitch and junior outfielder Gavin Wolf hitting a two-run home run to left.
  • The Yellow Jackets got a response in the fifth with an RBI double to center from Vonderhaar.
  • Castillo followed that up with an RBI single up the middle.
  • Senior outfielder Andrew Parker (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) knocked in two with an RBI double center to make it a 13-6 game.
  • Junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) got BW on the board in the sixth with a sacrifice fly of his own.
  • Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC first baseman Jamie Perebzak got Otterbein back in the scoring column with an RBI fielder's choice.
  • Guggenheim got the Yellow Jackets to responded in the eight with a two-run single up the middle to make it a 16-7 game.
  • Clark picked up another RBI with a single that scored Terzola.
  • The last runs of the game came off a two-run homer from Sprowls to close the game at 17-9.

On the Mound

  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Dylan Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) got the start and went two and third innings allowing three runs on three hits while walking two and striking out a pair.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) pitched the rest of the way going six and two-third innings allowing six runs on nine hits and striking out three with three walks.

Game 2

BW (28-5, 12-2 OAC) was led behind the arm of sophomore right-handed pitcher Kade Swisher (Berea/Berea-Midpark) who threw a complete game shutout allowing six hits, two walks while striking out seven. At the plate Mazula led the way picking up two more RBIs. 

Scoring Plays

  • The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the fourth inning behing Mazula's two-run single into left.
  • BW tacked on one more behind an RBI double to right center off the bat of Clark.

On the Mound

  • Swisher was the only one needed in game 2 as he went nine scoreless innings allowing just six hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Beyond the Box Score

  • The Yellow Jackets picked up their third shutout of the season which is the most since the 2018 season.
  • Swisher is just the second BW pitcher to throw a complete game this season and it was the first complete game of his career..
  • All nine starters got a hit in game 1, marking just the second time this season the Yellow Jacket offense has had all nine starters register a hit.
  • The 17 runs scored in game 1 mark a season high in runs scored.
  • The seven runs scored in the first inning is tied for the most runs scored in an inning this season.
