Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep of the Colonels

DANVILLE, Ky. – The No. 10 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team finished off the weekend with their third victory over Centre (Ky.) College in a non-conference game by a final score of 16-4 on the Gary Wright Field inside Fishman Field. 

BW (3-0) was led on offense by junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/ Notre Dame Cathedral latin) who went 4-5 with two doubles, four runs batted in and one run scored. Senior first basemen Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) went 3-5 with a double and two runs batted in. Centre (0-3) was led by senior catcher Will Cline who 2-3 with a solo home run.

Scoring Plays

  • The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring in the third with RBI singles by sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward), Clark and Castillo.
  • The Colonels got one back in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single from sophomore catcher Perry Nadreau.
  • Following a leadoff double and a steal, senior Academic All-OAC utilityman Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) scored on a wild pitch.
  • Sophomore outfielder Brandon Gelpi (Monroeville, Pa./ Pittsburgh Central Catholic) knocked out of the park for a solo home run.
  • Capolupo hit an RBI single that scored junior catcher Mark Mohnickey Jr. (North Ridgeville/St. Edward).
  • Clark hit his first RBI double in the fourth scoring Capolupo and he would later score on error.
  • Cline hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Junior third basemen Luc Morgan hit an RBI single.
  • Mohnickey hit an RBI single that scored Gelpi for the only run in the fifth inning.
  • Castillo hit an RBI double that scored senior All-American Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) for the only run in the sixth as BW led 10-3.
  • In the seventh, Clark picked up another RBI single this time scoring senior catcher JT Mazula (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills).
  • Clark and Kolenich pulled off a double steal with Clark stealing second and Kolenich stealing home.
  • In the ninth, the Yellow Jackets would four to take a double-digit lead with an RBI double by Clark, an RBI single by sophomore infielder Noah English (Perrysburg) and a two run double by Mazula.
  • Centre would get one more run in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single.

On the Mound

  • Senior left-hander pitcher Nik Baldis (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) picked up the start and win going three innings, allowing three hits and one run.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Clay Anderson (Broadview heights/Trinity) came on in relief pitching an inning, giving up three hits, two runs and striking out two batters.
  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Dylan Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) was next in line as he pitched two innings, giving up two hits and striking out three.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Aidan Bennett (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) pitched one inning in relief with one strikeout.
  • Freshman right-handed pitcher Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) also pitched one inning.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Gordon Seger (Rome/Grand Valley) closed the game out in the ninth giving up two hits and allowing one run.

BW takes the field again on Saturday, February 25 with a non-conference game in Washington, Pa. as they take on State University of New York - Oswego State at 2:30 p.m. at Ross Memorial Park at Washington and Jefferson (Pa.) College.
