No. 6 Baseball Cruises Past Dutchmen

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The No. 6 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team cruised past Lebanon Valley (Pa.) College in the final game of the team's annual Spring Break Trip to the Snowbird Classic by a final score of 14-3 at Centennial Park on Field #9.

BW (10-2) was led by sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) who went 4-4 with three runs scored, two runs batted in (RBI), a walk and a stolen base. Junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) went 2-4 with two doubles, a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Scoring Plays

  • The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first with a run scored by Kolenich off a throwing error by the catcher and senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) drove in Clark with an RBI single.
  • BW extended their lead to 5-0 in the top of the second following on an RBI single by senior All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) and RBI doubles from Kolenich and Clark.
  • The Yellow Jackets doubled their lead in the top of the third to take a 10-0 advantage. BW scored off RBI singles from Capolupo and Kolenich, an RBI double from Clark and an RBI groundout from senior All-American first baseman Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman).
  • Lebanon Valley (3-8-1) got in the board in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single from freshman infielder Luke Pollock.
  • The Yellow Jackets regained a 10 run lead with a sacrifice fly from Vonderhaar.
  • The Dutchmen scored two in the bottom of the seventh to make it an 11-3 game. Freshman infielder Owen Berry scored off a wild pitch and junior infielder Ethan O'Loughlin hit an RBI single.
  • Sophomore infielder Noah English (Perrysburg) extended the BW lead with a two-run triple to right field. He would later score off a wild pitch as the Yellow Jackets took a 14-3 lead in the eighth.

On the Mound

  • Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) picked up the start going six innings and improving his record to 2-0. He allowed a run on seven hits and two walks while striking out five.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Kyle Maruna (Medina) pitched in the seventh, not recording an out and allowing two runs on one walk and hit batter.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Aidan Bennett (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk and striking out two batters.
  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Dylan Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) pitched an inning and two thirds allowing one hit and striking out batter.
  • Senior left-handed pitcher Nik Baldis (Wexford, Pa./North Alleghney) got the final out of the game on a strikeout and walked a batter.

BW returns to action on Wednesday, March 15 when they play a non-conference game in Oberlin against Oberlin College on Dill Field at 4:00 p.m.
