No. 10 Baseball Knocks Off No. 17 Oswego State

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The No. 10 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team knocked off No. 17 nationally ranked State University of New York – Oswego in a non-conference neutral site game by a final score of 12-5 at Ross Memorial Park on the campus of Washington and Jefferson (Pa.) College.

The Yellow Jackets got a jolt on offense from senior outfielder Andrew Parker (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) who went 2-3 with a two-run home run. Sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) went 3-4 with an RBI double. He knocked in two RBIs and scored two runs. 

Scoring Plays

  • 1st – Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) got BW on the board with an RBI single that scored Kolenich. (BW 1-0)
  • 3rd – Kolenich ripped an RBI ground-rule double to left center to kick off a rally. (BW 2-0)
  • 3rd – Kolenich would score on a passed ball. (BW 3-0)
  • 3rd- Senior Academic All-OAC utility Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) gives the Yellow Jackets their third run of the third inning with an RBI groundout. (BW 4-0)
  • 3rd – BW jumped out to big lead as Parker cleared the bases with two-run. Homer to right center. (BW 6-0) 
  • 4th – Oswego State scores their first run on a wild pitch. (BW 6-1)
  • 4th – Sam Allen gives the Lakers another run on an RBI single. (BW 6-2)
  • 4th – Jelan Hamer hits into an RBI fielder's choice for Oswego State. (BW 6-3)
  • 4th – The Lakers get on last run in the inning off a Julian Drew RBI single. (BW 6-4)
  • 6th – Kolenich gets the Yellow Jackets a run back with his second RBI of the day with a single. (BW 7-4)
  • 7th – Guggenheim kicks off another big inning for BW with an RBI single. (BW 8-4)
  • 7th – Senior first baseman Carl Pennington (Wadsworth) comes up big in a pinch-hit opportunity. He hits a two-run triple to give the Yellow Jackets another six-run lead. (BW 10-4)
  • 7th – Junior catcher Mark Mohnickey Jr. (North Ridgeville/St. Edward) closed out the inning with a sacrifice fly that gave BW their largest lead of the game.
  • 8th – Oswego State scored their last run of the game in eight off an RBI groundout by Brett Myers. (BW 11-5)
  • 8th – Senior All-American infielder Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) solidifies the Yellow Jackets victory with an RBI double to right. (BW 12-5)

On the Mound

  • Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) returned to the mound going four innings and giving up four runs. He struck out six batters and gave up four hits and three walks.
  • Out of the bullpen, senior right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) pitched the last five innings giving up just one run. He struck out nine and gave up seven hits.

BW returns to the field on Sunday, February 25 when they play a doubleheader at Washington and Jefferson. They open the day with a game against Washington and Jefferson at 11:00 a.m. In the second game, the Yellow Jackets will take on Oswego State at 2:00 p.m. Both games will be played at Ross Memorial Park.
