No. 6 Baseball Picks Up Comeback Victory Over Swarthmore (Pa.)

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The No. 6 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team recorded a come from behind victory over Swarthmore (Pa.) College in the Snowbird Classic by a final score of 9-3 at Centennial Park on Field #10.

BW (9-2) was led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) who went 3-4 with two runs batted-in (RBIs). Sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) went 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. The BW bullpen threw four scoreless innings allowing just three baserunners.

Scoring Plays

  • Swarthmore (5-4) got on the board first in the top of the first with an RBI groundout after an error put a runner in scoring position.
  • In the fourth, senior infielder Nate Jbara hit a solo home run over the left field fence to give the Garnet a 2-0 lead.
  • In the fifth, Swarthmore extended their lead with an RBI single from sophomore catcher Matthew Silvestre.
  • The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the sixth with an up the middle RBI single from Castillo.
  • In the seventh after the Garnet walked the bases loaded, senior outfielder Andrew Parker (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 3-2.
  • In the same at bat, junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) singled through the hole between first and second. BW scored two on the play and took a 4-3 lead.
  • Castillo picked up his second RBI of the day on an RBI single through the right side of the infield that scored Clark and extended the Yellow Jackets lead to 5-3.
  • BW scored a run in the third straight in the eighth as Capolupo picked up an RBI off a hit by pitch.
  • In the next at bat, Kolenich picked up two RBIs on a single to right center that gave the Yellow Jackets an 8-3 lead.
  • Senior All-American first baseman Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) drove home another run with a sacrifice fly to center.

On the Mound

  • Senior right-handed pitcher Clay Anderson (Broadview Heights/Trinity) picked up his first start of the season going five innings with three runs, two earned, on five hits and striking out two batters.
  • Freshman left-handed pitcher Carson Collins (South Bend, Ind./Saint Joseph's) came in relief going two scoreless innings allowing two hits and striking out a pair. Collins picked up his first victory in his collegiate career.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Aidan Bennett (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) pitched a scoreless eighth inning allowing no baserunners and striking out one.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) pitched a scoreless ninth inning allowing a hit and striking out a pair.

BW returns to the field on Friday, March 10 when it takes on Babson (Mass.) College in the Snowbird Classic at Centennial Park on Field #10.
