Men’s Track and Field Begins Outdoor Campaign with Runner-Up Finish

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's track and field teams began the outdoor season with a runner-up finish at the Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology Early Bird at the William Welch Complex.

BW finished second of nine teams with 85 points. Rose-Hulman won its own meet with a total of 215 points.

Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference thrower Zak Dysert (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) won all three events he competed in: hammer throw, discus throw and shot put. He won the hammer and the shot with career-best marks of 197 feet, 8 inches and 46'11" while tossing 154'3" to take the discus as well. In the javelin throw, freshman thrower Matthew Staley (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) hit a mark of 136'6" to place seventh.

On the track, a quad of Yellow Jackets had runner-up finishes between senior Academic All-OAC sprinter Brandon Cole (Vermillion), junior hurdler Robby Becker (South Amherst/Firelands), sophomore distance runner Larry Salerno (Mentor) and freshman distance runner David Prather (Hardin, Mont.). In the two hurdle events, Cole posted a time of 1:00.42 in the 400-meter while Becker crossed the finish line in 16.18 seconds in the 110-meter. Salerno ran his way to second place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a career-best time of 10:50.25. Prather finished second in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:00.39 and also had a fifth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run in 4:13.13.

Senior distance runner Spencer Mahon (North Royalton) placed fourth in the 5,000-meter run in a career-best time of 15:41.09. Freshman sprinter Drew Kopchak (Port Clinton) had a pair of seventh-place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dashes in times of 11.52 seconds and 23.54 seconds, respectively.

BW continues the outdoor season on Saturday, March 23, at the Amy Adams Memorial Invitational, hosted by Muskingum University on the Johnson Family Track.
