BW Women’s Tennis Team Sweeps FDU (N.J.) in Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team beat Fairleigh Dickinson (N.J.) University College at Florham, 9-0, today (Wednesday, March 13, 2012) at the Hilton Head Beach & Resort on the fourth and final day of play on its Annual Spring Break trip.  The sweep marks the first of the season for the Yellow Jackets.

With its win, BW is 2-6 overall and plays Greenville (Ill.) College this afternoon at 3:30 p.m.. With its loss, FDU-Florham falls to 0-7 this season.

BW led, 3-0, after doubles play, and won all] six singles matches.

In doubles play, No. 1 tandem of three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference and two-time Academic All-OAC senior Becky Mittler (Elyria/ Elyria Catholic) and freshman Kelsey Blatt (Tallmadge) defeated juniors Megan Scherer and Jenna Cowie, 8-3, and improved their season record to 4-10.  The No. 2 duo of junior Morgan Baker (Vermilion/ Elyria Catholic) and freshman Mackenzi Baker (Vermilion/ Elyria Catholic) beat junior Lindsey Martin and sophomore Kim Martin, 8-1, in an all-sister match-up, and improved to 2-11.  At No. 3 doubles, junior Elizabeth Keller (Cincinnati/ Walnut Hills) and freshman Mackenzie Donalson (Hilliard/ Davidson) defeated freshmen Shannon Andress and Gabriella Vitiello, 8-0, in their first match as a duo.

In singles play, No. 1 Blatt beat Scherer, 6-3 and 6-2, and improved her season record to 6-7.  No. 2 Morgan Baker defeated Cowie, 6-2 and 6-1, improving to 3-10.  At No. 3, Donalson lost just one game to Kim Martin, winning 6-1 and 6-0, and improved to 4-10.  No. 4 All-OAC senior Danielle Rueger (Ashland/ Senior) shutout Vitiello, 6-0 and 6-0, and upped her season record to 4-9.  At No. 5, junior Whitney Yoder (Medina/ Senior) beat Lindsey Martin, 6-1 and 6-0, improving to 3-2.  No. 6 Keller defeated freshman Tenzin Lama, 7-5 and 6-3, earning her first win of the season.

The Yellow Jackets will return north to face Division III powerhouse Kenyon College on March 22.  The first Ohio Athletic Conference match is on March 27 at Muskingum University and the first home match at the "Pop" Collins Tennis Complex is against The College of Wooster on April 3 at 4:30 p.m.

The BW women's tennis program is in a rebuilding stage. The Yellow Jacket women have won four of the past six OAC titles and advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament four times.
