BW Women’s Tennis Team Beats OWU in Delaware

DELAWARE, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team defeated non-conference rival Ohio Wesleyan University, 7-2, today inside the Gordon Field Center.  The victory was the seventh in the last nine matches for the Yellow Jackets.

The win improves BW to 8-8 overall prior to playing an Ohio Athletic Conference match tomorrow (Saturday, April 20) against Ohio Northern University at the "Pop" Collins Tennis Courts at 12:00 noon.  With its loss, OWU is 3-14 overall.

The Yellow Jackets took a 2-1 lead after doubles matches and won 5-1 in six singles matches to earn the victory -- the 331st in the career of 29-year veteran Head Coach Jack Bethlenfalvy.

In doubles play, the No. 1 tandem of freshman Kelsey Blatt (Tallmadge) and All-OAC and Academic All-OAC senior Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/ Elyria Catholic) were defeated by OWU's Meghan Guthrie and Alexandra Webb, 8-6.  Current OWU Assistant Coach and 2012 BW graduate Jenny Green (2008-2012) is seventh all-time with 61 doubles triumphs.

In addition and at No. 2 doubles, freshman Mackenzi Baker (Vermilion/ Elyria Catholic) and junior Morgan Baker (Vermilion/ Elyria Catholic) beat OWU's Whitney Lonnemann and Ellie Magner, 8-4, to improve their seasonal mark to 7-13.  At No. 3, freshman Mackenzi Donalson (Hilliard/ Davidson) and junior Whitney Yoder (Medina/ Senior) beat OWU's Vendala Clark and Liz Spragens, 8-1, to improve to 9-9 overall.

In singles play, No. 1 player Mittler defeated Webb, 6-4 and 6-0, and improved to 10-9 overall this season. The win also was the 53rd singles win of her career and tied her with Jen O'Neill (1997-2000) and Krista Marshall (2005-2008) for ninth place on the school's all-time victory list.

In addition and at No. 2 singles, Blatt beat Guthrie, 7-6, 4-6, and 7-6 with the two tie-breaking scores of 7-5 and 11-9, respectively. With the win, Blatt improved to 11-9 overall.  At No. 4, Donalson beat Magner, 6-1, 3-6 and 6-3, to improve to 9-12 overall.  At No. 5, senior Danielle Rueger (Ashland/ Senior) defeated Clark, 6-0 and 6-0, to improve to 10-10 overall.  At No. 6, Mackenzi Baker beat Spragens, 6-0 and 6-1, to improve to 5-11 overall.

After hosting ONU tomorrow, the BW women are home on Monday, April 22 to play The College of Wooster at the Collins Courts at 4:30 p.m., travel to University Heights to play OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University on Tuesday, April 23 at 3:30 p.m. and then end its season by hosting both OAC rivals Otterbein University on Friday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m. and Marietta College on Saturday, April 27 at 1:00 p.m.
