BW Women’s Tennis Team Defeats John Carroll, 7-2

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 7-2,  in an OAC dual match at the "Pop" Collins Tennis Courts.  It was the second of four season-ending home matches this week for the Yellow Jackets.

With its victory, BW improves to 10-9 overall and 5-2 in the OAC prior to hosting OAC-rival Otterbein University this Friday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m. and ending its season against Marietta on Saturday, April 27 at 1:00 p.m. Both matches are to be played on the Collins Courts.

With the loss the Blue Streaks fall to 6-10 and 4-5 in the OAC.

The Yellow Jackets took a 2-1 lead after doubles play and won five of six singles matches. 

In doubles play, the No. 1 tandem of senior All-OAC player Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/Elyria Catholic), who is this weeks OAC Women's Tennis Player-of-the-Week, and freshman Kelsey Blatt (Tallmadge) defeated Catherine Engel and Kyle Cousineau by a score of 8-4,  At No. 2 doubles, freshman Mackenzi Baker (Vermilion/ Elyria Catholic) and junior Morgan Baker (Vermilion/ Elyria Catholic) defeated the JCU tandem of Tracy Gibson and Anna Stein, 8-3.

In singles play, No. 1 player Mittler beat Engel by scores of  6-0 and 6-0, to improve to 13-9 on the season. She now has 56 career wins and moves into a tie for seventh place all-time for career wins with Jenny Greene (2008-12). 

In addition at No. 2 singles, Blatt defeated Stein, 6-2, 4-6, and 10-8. With the win, Blatt improved to 13-10 overall.  At No. 4, freshman Mackenzie Donalson (Hilliard/ Davidson) beat Cousineau, 6-0 and 6-1, to improve to 10-14 overall.  At No. 5, senior Danielle Rueger (Ashland/ Senior) defeated Hannah Baumwell, 6-4 and 6-2, to improve to 12-11 overall.  At No. 6, Mackenzi Baker beat Emily Gorndt, 6-4 and 6-4, to improve to 6-13 overall.

The Yellow Jackets have won four of the past seven OAC titles and advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament four times during that time span.
