MEADVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA -- Senior number-one singles standout Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/ Elyria Catholic) won her match in a tie-breaker, but the Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team lost 8-1 in dual match competition at Allegheny College.
BW originally was supposed to participate at Allegheny's Nancy J. Heath Invitational Tournament, but when inclement weather cancelled that event, Yellow Jacket coach Jack Bethlenfalvy and his Allegheny counterpart decided to play a dual match. BW is now 0-1 and next plays at the annual Oberlin College Invitational from Sept. 14-16.
In singles play, Mittler defeated Allegheny's Tiffany Kollach by the scores of 4-6, 6-4 and 10-8 in the tie-breaker. The win was Mittler's 44th of her career and ties her with Ashley Brewster (2000-2003) for 17th all-time with a 44-34 career mark. She needs one more win to tie Kathy Hannah (1996-1999) for 16th place.
In addition to Mittler, freshman Kelsey Blatt (Tallmadge) started at No.2 singles, freshman Mackenzie Donalson (Hilliard/ Davidson) was at No.3, junior Morgan Baker (Vermilion/ Elyria Catholic) was at No.4, senior Danielle Rueger (Ashland) played at No.5 and freshman Mackenzi Baker (Vermilion/ Elyria Catholic) rounded out the starters. In doubles play, Mittler and Blatt played at No.1, the Baker sisters were at No.2 and Donalson and Rueger formed the third duo.
Also playing exhibition singles and doubles matches were junior Whitney Yoder (Medina) and junior Elizabeth Keller (Cincinnati/ Walnut Hills).
Following the Oberlin tourney, the BW women end the 2012 fall season at the annual ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Central Region Tournament from Sept. 28-30.
