BW Women’s Tennis Team Beats Marietta, 8-1

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 8-1, today (Saturday, April 27, 2013) in an OAC dual match at the "Pop" Collins Tennis Courts to end its season.

With its win, BW ends its season at 11-10 overall and 6-3 in the OAC. The Yellow Jackets won seven of their last 10 matches to have their 20th winning season under veteran Head Coach Jack Bethlenfalvy. Bethlenfalvy, the winningest women's tennis coach in the state of Ohio, improved his career mark to 334-223 in 29 seasons at BW.  With its loss, Marietta dropped to 2-13 overall and 0-7 in the OAC.

The Yellow Jackets took a 3-0 lead after doubles play and won five of six singles matches.

In doubles play, the No. 1 tandem of senior All-OAC player Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/ Elyria Catholic), who is this week's OAC Women's Tennis Player-of-the-Week, and freshman Kelsey Blatt (Tallmadge) won by the score of 8-0 to improve to 13-13 overall.  The victory was the 60th of Mittler's career and left her in eighth place all-time.

In addition, the No.2 duo of Mackenzi Baker and Morgan Baker (Vermillion/ Elyria Catholic) defeated Marietta's Kelsey Jeffrey and Natalie Turner by the score of 8-0 to improve 10-15 this season. At No. 3, freshman Mackenzie Donalson (Hilliard/ Davidson) and junior Whitney Yoder (Medina/ Senior) defeated the Pioneers' Mollee Brown and Lauren Bush by the score of 8-2 to improve to 9-9 this season.

In singles play, Mittler defeated Marietta's Cate Gisser at No.1 by the scores of 6-0 and 6-0 to improve to 14-10 this season and 57-44 for her career.  Her 57 career singles wins ranks her eighth all-time. In addition, Mittler's 60 doubles wins, combined with her 57 singles triumphs gives her 117 career combination victories to end her career seventh all-time at the University.

In addition at No. 2 singles, Blatt beat Marietta's Natalie Turner by the scores of 6-1 and 6-1 to improve to 14-11 overall. At No.3 singles, Morgan Baker defeated Kelsey Jeffrey by the scores of 6-0 and 6-0 to improve her overall record to 8-17. At No.4 singles, Mackenzie Donalson defeated Lauren Bush by the scores of 6-1, 6-1 to improve to 11-15 overall. At No.5 singles, All-OAC senior Danielle Rueger (Ashland/ Senior) defeated Alex Seals by the scores of 6-0 and 6-0 to improve to 13-12.

The Yellow Jackets have won four of the past seven OAC titles and advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament four times during that time span.
