BW Women's Tennis Team Beats Capital, 9-0,

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University, 9-0,  at the "Pop" Collins Courts. 

The victory was the fourth in the last six matches for the Yellow Jackets. Highlighting the match for the Yellow Jackets was senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC No. 1 singles and doubles standout Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/Elyria Catholic), who won her 50th career singles match and 54th career doubles match.

Mittler's singles win moved her into 11th place on the school's all-time win list. Mittler beat Capital's freshman Ashlin Gable by the scores of 6-1 and 6-3 to improve to 50-43 in singles for her career.  In doubles, Mittler and freshman Kelsey Blatt (Tallmadge) beat Capital's Gable and freshman Julia Lucas by an 8-5 score for her 55th career doubles win to move into eighth place all-time.

With its win, BW improved to 6-8 overall and 3-1 in the OAC.  In addition, this Saturday, April 13, the Yellow Jackets were scheduled to play a match at OAC foe Wilmington College, but due to injuries and other problems, Wilmington has dropped the remainder of its women's tennis schedule.  BW will receive a forfeit, 5-0, win. With its loss, Capital dropped to 6-7 overall and 3-1 in the OAC.

The Yellow Jackets took a 3-0 lead after doubles matches and won all six singles matches to earn the sweep.

In doubles play, No. 1 Mittler and Blatt defeated Gable and Lucas, 8-5, and improved their season record to 8-11.  The No. 2 tandem of junior Morgan Baker (Vermilion/Elyria Catholic) and freshman Mackenzi Baker (Vermilion/Elyria Catholic) beat freshman Jennie Schott and sophomore Alyssa Trier, 8-1, and improved to 5-13.  At No. 3, freshman Mackenzie Donalson (Hilliard/ Davidson) and junior Whitney Yoder (Medina) defeated juniors Kathryn MacFarland and Elisabeth McLaughlin, 8-0, to improve to 7-9.

In singles play, No. 1 Mittler defeated Gable, 6-1 and 6-3, and improved her season record to 8-9. At No. 2, Blatt beat Lucas, 6-4 and 6-0, climbing to 9-9.  No. 3 Morgan Baker defeated McLaughlin, 6-2 and 6-3, improving her record this season to 5-13. At No. 4 Donalson defeated Schott, 6-3, 2-6 and 6-4, upping her season record to 7-12.  No. 5, All-OAC senior Danielle Rueger (Ashland) beat sophomore Corinne Hohenstein, 6-3 and 6-1, improving to 8-10. At No. 6 Mackenzi Baker defeated sophomore Rebecca Hunt, 6-3 and 6-0, and improved to 4-11.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, April 17 at Heidelberg University at 3:30 p.m.  The next home match is on Saturday, April 20 when BW hosts Ohio Northern University at 12:00 noon.
