BW Women’s Tennis Team Sweeps Heidelberg in Tiffin

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team swept Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg University, 9-0, today (Wednesday, April 17, 2013) at the Heidelberg Courts.  The victory was the sixth in the last eight matches for the Yellow Jackets.

The win improves BW to 7-8 overall and 4-1 in the OAC.  Heidelberg falls to 2-8 overall and 1-2 in the OAC.

The Yellow Jackets took a 3-0 lead after doubles matches and won all six singles matches to earn the sweep.

In doubles play, the No. 1 tandem of freshman Kelsey Blatt (Tallmadge) and All-OAC senior Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/ Elyria Catholic) defeated sophomore Katie Strahan and freshman Sofey Fugate, 9-8, including 8-6 in the tie-breaker, and evened their season record at 9-11 overall.  In addition, the win for Mittler was her 56th career doubles triumph and ranks her eighth all-time. At No. 2 doubles, freshman Mackenzi Baker (Vermilion/ Elyria Catholic) and junior Morgan Baker (Vermilion/ Elyria Catholic) beat junior Deidre Potter and sophomore Sarah Potts, 8-3, to improve to 6-13.  At No. 3, freshman Mackenzi Donalson (Hilliard/ Davidson) and junior Whitney Yoder (Medina/ Senior), beat sophomore Erin Gorrell and junior Melissa Lovati, 8-3, and upped their season record to 8-9.

In singles play, No. 1 player Mittler defeated Strahan, 6-2 and 6-0, and improved to 9-9. The win also was Mittler's 52nd career singles triumph and she ranks 11th all-time. At No. 2 singles, Blatt beat Fugate, 8-2 in a pro set, and climbed to 6-7.  At No. 3, Morgan Baker defeated Potter, 8-6 in a pro set, and upped her record to 3-9.  At No. 4, Donalson beat Potts, 6-1 and 6-2, and improved to 5-7.  At No. 5, senior Danielle Rueger (Ashland/ Senior) defeated sophomore Rachael Brushaber, 6-1 and 6-1, to improve to 6-7.  At No. 6, Yoder beat Lovati, 8-5 in a pro set, and improved to 4-7.

Mittler's 108 combined career wins (52 in singles + 56 in doubles) ranks seventh all-time in BW history. The BW victory also was the 330th for 28-year Head Coach Jack Bethlenfalvy who has won more matches than any other women's tennis coach in Ohio history at any level.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action Friday, April 19 when they face Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware at 6:30 p.m. before taking on Ohio Northern University in an OAC match on Saturday, April 20 in Berea at noon.

The BW women's tennis team has won four of the last seven OAC titles and advanced to four of the last seven NCAA Division III National Tournaments.
